Interactions of the hormones leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin, resistin, and PYY3-36 with the reproductive system.

2006

Objective To summarize the effects of novel hormones (leptin, ghrelin, adiponectin, resistin, and PYY3-36) secreted from adipose tissue and the gastrointestinal tract that have been discovered to exert different effects on several reproductive functions, such as the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, embryo development, implantation physiology, and clinically relevant conditions. Design A MEDLINE computer search was performed to identify relevant articles. Result(s) Leptin and ghrelin exert important roles on body weight regulation, eating behavior, and reproduction, acting on the central nervous system and target reproductive organs. As a marker of adequate nutritional stores, these horm…

Serum leptin level as a diagnostic and prognostic marker in infectious diseases and sepsis: A comprehensive literature review.

2021

Abstract Background: Infections and sepsis are common causes of morbidity and mortality, with an increasing incidence worldwide. Leptin is involved in the inflammatory process and may modulate the cytokine production, immune cell proliferation and endothelial function. There are conflicting results regarding alterations of leptin levels in infectious diseases and the outcome from sepsis. The aim of the current article is to provide an overview of the medical literature on the correlations between variations of leptin levels and infectious diseases and sepsis. Methods: We performed an extensive literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar databases, using keywords to identify articles rela…

Letter to the Editor: Comment on “The Application of Artificial Intelligence for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Liver Diseases”

2021

among the forthcoming articles to be published in Hepatology, I noticed the extensive review by Ahn, Connell, Simonetto, Hughes & Shah concerning "The application of artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases" [1]. As a bioethicist, I need to raise some concern about the perspective given by this review, which disregards some important issues concerning ethical aspects and patient-physician relationship.

Chapter 22: Assuring the quality, safety and efficacy of HPV vaccines: The scientific basis of regulatory expectations pre- and post-licensure

2006

The potential of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines will only be realized if the vaccine candidates under development prove to be safe and effective and can be consistently produced to define quality standards. Whilst the responsibility for delivering a safe and effective product rests with the vaccine producer, a vaccine requires a license to allow it to be placed on the market. Licensure is based on an evaluation of the safety and efficacy profile of a vaccine candidate by national regulatory authorities, ideally on the basis of internationally agreed, science-based specifications and procedures. For vaccines, these international specifications are developed by the World Health Organizat…

Use of Anesthetics Associated to Vasoconstrictors for Dentistry in Patients With Cardiopathies. Review of the Literature Published in the Last Decade

2012

Objective: The use of local anesthetics associated to vasoconstrictor agents in dentistry is thoroughly justified and is widely extended, but we cannot ignore the fact that anesthetic infiltration poses risk of complications throughout the dental treatment period. The objective of the present review is to document the reported effects the use of the local anesthetics most widely employed in dentistry, with or without association to vasoconstrictor agents may have in patients with any sort of cardiopathy. Study Design: We have searched for randomized clinical trials on the assessment of the cardiovascular effects of local anesthetics used in dentistry, without limits as regards age or sex, c…

UC-USP collaborative exercise on photobiomodulation therapy in neurological orofacial disturbances.

2020

Background Neurosensory peripheral disorders are one of the most common risks associated with iatrogenic and/or post-traumatic injuries. It is often related to disability. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is a nonsurgical and safe procedure which can accelerate and improve the regeneration of injured biological tissue. This study aims to analyze the impact of PBMT, in the quality of life and impairment of individuals with orofacial neurological peripheral disturbance. Material and methods A retrospective analysis in the database of the dental traumatology clinic of the Hospital Centre of the University of Coimbra/Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra was performed.5 out of 50 in…
