Reading the stars for hepatic fibrosis or how to predict the severity of liver disease in patients with NASH

2018

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Non-invasive biomarkers are needed for monitoring changes in liver histology in patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Obeticholic acid (OCA) was shown to improve fibrosis in patients with NASH in the FLINT trial; a post hoc analysis of these data was performed to determine the relationship between 3 non-invasive fibrosis markers and liver fibrosis improvement. METHODS: In the Phase 2b FLINT trial, patients were randomised (1:1) to receive 25 mg OCA or placebo once daily for 72 weeks. Aspartate aminotransferase:platelet ratio index (APRI), fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS) were evaluated in serum at baseline …

The Southampton Consensus Guidelines for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery: From Indication to Implementation

2018

OBJECTIVE: The European Guidelines Meeting on Laparoscopic Liver Surgery was held in Southampton on February 10 and 11, 2017 with the aim of presenting and validating clinical practice guidelines for laparoscopic liver surgery.BACKGROUND: The exponential growth of laparoscopic liver surgery in recent years mandates the development of clinical practice guidelines to direct the speciality's continued safe progression and dissemination.METHODS: A unique approach to the development of clinical guidelines was adopted. Three well-validated methods were integrated: the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network methodology for the assessment of evidence and development of guideline statements; th…

Should organs from hepatitis C-positive donors be used in hepatitis C-negative recipients for liver transplantation?

2018

Given the scarcity of donated organs and the frequency of death on the waiting list, strategies that could improve the available supply of high-quality liver grafts are much needed. Direct-acting antiviral agent (DAA) regimens have proved to be highly effective to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV), even in the setting of posttransplantation. The question arises as to whether transplant communities should consider the utilization of HCV-positive donors into HCV-negative recipients. This review summarizes risk of transmission, treatment options with success rate, and ethical considerations for usage of HCV-positive donors. Liver Transplantation 24 831-840 2018 AASLD.

In search of a science-based application: A learning tool for reading acquisition

2009

This is a story about the fate of a psychological application: from its conception to the optimistic vision surrounding its future. We hope that this application - an enjoyable learning game (www or mobile phone-based, available free of charge to the end users) for children - can at best help millions of children in their reading acquisition in the future. Its basis was created by following intensively the development of children with (N = 107) and without (N = 92) genetic (familial) risk for dyslexia from birth to puberty in the Jyväskylä Longitudinal study of Dyslexia (JLD)-project. We summarize some of the major findings of the JLD in order to facilitate understanding of the reasons and …
