Breaking bad news: How to cope.

2018

Physicians often are uncomfortable when communicating an unfavorable outcome: they feel inadequate in the face of uncontrollable disease and unprepared to manage the emotional reactions of patients. For lack of proper training, they often adopt inappropriate ways to disclose unfavorable information. We will outline some key points about the issue of disclosing bad news and aim to provide useful tools to physicians who have to cope frequently with breaking bad news to patients, providing examples and clinical sceneries specific to gastroenterology and hepatology practice.

Problem-based learning versus lectures : comparison of academic results and time devoted by teachers in a course on Dentistry in Special Patients

2008

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching-learning technique centred on the complete development of the student. It has been successfully implemented in several universities, notably in the health sciences. The process of creating the European Higher Education Area, initiated in Bologna, encourages European universities to use new methodologies in the teaching-learning process, including PBL. Our objectives were to analyze the results obtained by using PBL with fifth-year Dentistry students. We made a comparison of academic results between students receiving lectures and PBL participants, and assessment of differences between them in the time devoted to tasks by students and teachers. PBL …

Efficacy of short-term psychotherapy for multiple medically unexplained physical symptoms: a meta-analysis.

2011

Multiple medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are considered to be difficult and costly to treat. The current meta-analysis therefore investigates the efficacy of short-term psychotherapy for MUPS. Based on a multiple-phase literature search, studies were selected according to a-priori defined inclusion criteria. The standardized mean gain was used as the effect size index. Separate data aggregation of between- and within-group contrasts was performed on the basis of a mixed effects model. Outcome variables were physical symptoms, disorder specific emotions, cognitions and behaviors, depressive symptoms, general psychopathology, functional impairment, and health care utilization. …
