Contractile responses of human thyroid arteries to vasopressin

2013

Abstract Aims In the present study we investigated the intervention of nitric oxide and prostacyclin in the responses to vasopressin of isolated thyroid arteries obtained from multi-organ donors. Main methods Paired artery rings from glandular branches of the superior thyroid artery, one normal and the other deendothelised, were mounted in organ baths for isometric recording of tension. Concentration–response curves to vasopressin were determined in the absence and in the presence of either the vasopressin V 1 receptor antagonist d(CH 2 ) 5 Tyr(Me)AVP (10 − 8  M), the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N G -monomethyl- l -arginine ( L -NMMA, 10 − 4  M), or the inhibitor of prostaglandins indom…

Outcome of enzyme replacement therapy in patients with Gaucher disease type I. The Romanian experience

2007

This study reports the first evaluation of therapeutic response in Romanian patients with Gaucher disease type I, after therapy with Cerezyme recently became available in our country.24 patients (11-50 years) received Cerezyme 20-60 U/kg every two weeks for at least 18 months. Haemoglobin, platelet count, volume of the liver and spleen, plasma chitotriosidase and the severity score were assessed every 6 months; skeletal radiography and osteodensitometry were also monitored.Eleven patients were splenectomized before start of therapy. Eight patients had anaemia (mean haemoglobin 9.4 g/dl) and 14 patients, of whom 13 were without splenectomy, had thrombocytopenia (mean 65,692/mm3). Haemoglobin…

Incidence, features, and outcomes of cytomegalovirus DNAemia in unmanipulated haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with …

2019

Background Conflicting data have been published as to the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia and CMV disease in patients undergoing haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide. Methods We conducted a multicenter retrospective study including 118 patients subjected to unmanipulated haplo-HSCT to further clarify this issue. An historic cohort comprising 165 patients undergoing other transplant modalities (HLA-matched related, matched unrelated or mismatched) was built for comparison purposes. Plasma CMV DNA monitoring was performed using two highly sensitive real-time PCR assays. Results Overall, the cumulative incidence of…

Picture naming yields highly consistent cortical activation patterns: Test–retest reliability of magnetoencephalography recordings

2020

Reliable paradigms and imaging measures of individual-level brain activity are paramount when reaching from group-level research studies to clinical assessment of individual patients. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides a direct, non-invasive measure of cortical processing with high spatiotemporal accuracy, and is thus well suited for assessment of functional brain damage in patients with language difficulties. This MEG study aimed to identify, in a delayed picture naming paradigm, source-localized evoked activity and modulations of cortical oscillations that show high test–retest reliability across measurement days in healthy individuals, demonstrating their applicability in clinical set…

Central obesity and hypertensionThe role of plasma endothelin

1996

Hypertension and central obesity are two conditions closely linked, but the mechanisms responsible for obesity-associated hypertension are still unclear. In the last few years, several studies addressed the role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the development and maintenance of hypertension. This study was designed to evaluate plasma ET-1 in normotensive and hypertensive central obese subjects compared with a lean healthy group. Our final goal was to analyze the relationship between plasma ET-1, blood pressure, and left ventricular structure and function in central obese subjects (both normotensives and hypertensives). ET-levels have been assessed by the radioimmunoassay method in 20 lean normote…

Arrhythmia profile in acromegaly.

1992

In a controlled study, the cardiac involvement and arrhythmia profile of 32 patients with acromegaly were correlated with endocrine parameters (somatomedine C, growth hormone), clinical score and duration of the disease. Data were compared with those of 50 controls free of cardiac disease. Stress ECG, 24 h Holter monitoring and echocardiography were performed. Supraventricular premature complexes occurred no more often in acromegalics than in controls. Both prevalence and severity of ventricular arrhythmia, however, were significantly higher in patients compared to controls (P less than 0.01). 15/32 (48%) acromegalic patients had complex ventricular arrhythmias (Lown III-IV) as compared wit…

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEILLANCE OF VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS IN SICILY, ITALY

1997

Abstract Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in Sicily. Although it is a notifiable disease, there is evidence that the actual number of cases is higher than that reported. In 1987, a regional reference center for active surveillance of VL was established and it recorded a total of 284 cases through 1995, a mean of 31.5 cases/year and about four-fold more than previously reported. Of the 284 cases, 150 (53%) were children (≤ 14 years of age), and of the 134 adults, 39 (29%) were coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The commonest viscerotropic zymodeme of Leishmania infantum, MON 1, was identified in 40 (93%) of 43 HIV-negative and eight (57%) of 14 HIV-positive patients. A…

Impact of cytomegalovirus DNAemia on overall and non-relapse mortality in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients.

2017

Background We conducted a retrospective single-center study to investigate the potential impact of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia on mortality in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients (allo-SCT). Methods A total of 151 consecutive patients who underwent T-cell replete allo-SCT were included in the study. Patients with CMV DNAemia were treated pre-emptively with antivirals upon detection of plasma CMV DNA loads >1500 IU/mL. Results At least one episode of CMV DNAemia occurred in 109 (72.2%), and 67 of these patients (61.5%) required one or more courses of antiviral therapy. The cumulative incidence of 1-year overall and non-relapse mortality (NRM) was 28.5% (95% confidence interval [CI],…

MRI findings in lingual venous malformations.

2003

To describe the plain and enhanced MRI findings of lingual venous malformations and to discuss the importance of contrast medium in the differential diagnosis of high intensity lesions of the tongue on T(2) weighted images. The clinical records and MR images of eight patients affected by a lingual venous malformation were retrospectively reviewed. Patients presented with a palpable submucosal bluish-red soft mass in the tongue. MRI examinations were performed on a 0.5 T superconducting unit. Plain and enhanced SE (spin echo) T(1) weighted and FSE (fast spin echo) T(2) weighted images were acquired in axial, sagittal and coronal planes. Axial SPGR (spoiled gradient recalled echo) T(1) weighte…
