Background and Objectives: Distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN) is one of the most common chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. Although it is usually characterized by progressive sensory loss, some patients may develop chronic pain. Assessment of DSPN is not difficult, but the biggest challenge is making the correct diagnosis and choosing the right treatment. To investigate the peripheral nerve function and the influence of hyperglycemia on nerve conduction in insulin-dependent diabetes, a one-year neurophysiological study was carried out in 30 type 1 diabetic patients ranging in age from 2-16 years. Aim The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of isolated small nerve fibre dysfunction on microvascular skin blood flow and transcutaneous oxygen tension in patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods Small nerve fibre dysfunction was assessed by the measurement of thermal and pain perception thresholds. Diabetic Foot Syndrome (DFS) is a common long-term complication of diabetes mellitus. DFS has recently been associated with adverse effects on brain function which could further impair the quality of life of these patients, as well as increase the social and economic burden, morbidity, and premature mortality of the disease. The current knowledge of neuropsychiatric alterations e.g. cognitive impairment, gait disorder, depression, and quality of life in patients with diabetic foot syndrome is summarized. Models for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a link with vascular risk.

Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is often part of the metabolic syndrome which includes central obesity, dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension. In turn, NAFLD may be associated with an increased vascular risk. Several experimental models which express histological steatosis or steatohepatitis with fibrosis have been described. This review identifies those models of NAFLD with features of vascular risk.

Aim The ecto-F1-ATPase/P2Y13 pathway plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport. Exogenous IF1, known as the natural mitochondrial specific inhibitor of F1-ATPase activity, inhibits ecto-F1-ATPase activity and decreases HDL-C uptake by hepatocytes. We previously found that IF1 is present in human serum and is negatively associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). Here, we investigated the relationship between serum IF1 concentration and mortality in CHD patients. Methods Serum IF1 was measured in 624 CHD patients aged 45-74 from the GENES (Genetique et ENvironement en Europe du Sud) study. After 9.1 years follow up, mortality rate was 24.5%.
