High performance liquid chromatography analysis of tear protein patterns in diabetic and non-diabetic dry-eye patients.
2001
To analyze and compare the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) runs of tear proteins from diabetic (DIDRY) and non-diabetic (DRY) dry-eye patients, and healthy subjects (CTRL). The patterns were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods.Tears (total 56 eyes: CTRL: n=16, DIDRY: n=21, and DRY: n=19) were analyzed by HPLC, using a size-exclusion column with an eluent of 0.5 M sodium phosphate buffer. The patients were primarily grouped according to the results of the basic secretory test (BST) in combination with subjective symptoms such as burning, foreign body sensations, tearing, and "dryness" of the eyes. Patients with BST valuesor = 10 mm/5 min plus two subjective symptoms…
Role of exercise-induced hepatokines in metabolic disorders.
2019
International audience; The health-promoting effects of physical activity to prevent and treat metabolic disorders are numerous. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not yet completely deciphered. In recent years, studies have referred to the liver as an endocrine organ, since it releases specific proteins called hepatokines. Some of these hepatokines are involved in whole body metabolic homeostasis and are theorized to participate in the development of metabolic disease. In this regard, the present review describes the role of Fibroblast Growth Factor 21, Fetuin-A, Angiopoietin-like protein 4, and Follistatin in metabolic disease and their production in response to acute exerci…
Recomendaciones preventivas cardiovasculares. Actualización PAPPS 2020
2020
The recommendations of the semFYC's Program for Preventive Activities and Health Promotion (PAPPS) for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are presented. The following sections are included: Epidemiological review, where the current morbidity and mortality of CVD in Spain and its evolution as well as the main risk factors are described; Cardiovascular (CV) risk tables and recommendations for the calculation of CV risk; Main risk factors such as arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus, describing the method for their diagnosis, therapeutic objectives and recommendations for lifestyle measures and pharmacological treatment; Indications for antiplatelet therapy, a…
Tackling the Problem of Data Imbalancing for Melanoma Classification
2016
Comunicació de congrés presentada a: 3rd International Conference on Bioimaging, BIOIMAGING 2016 - Part of 9th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies, BIOSTEC 2016, Roma, Italy Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, yet melanoma is the most treatable kind of cancer when diagnosed at an early stage. In this regard, Computer-Aided Diagnosis systems based on machine learning have been developed to discern melanoma lesions from benign and dysplastic nevi in dermoscopic images. Similar to a large range of real world applications encountered in machine learning, melanoma classification faces the challenge of imbalanced data, where …
Prevalence of biopsied oral lesions in a Department of Oral Surgery (2007 - 2009)
2011
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of the hard and soft tissue lesions biopsied in the Department of Oral Surgery of the Barcelona University Dental Clinic (Barcelona, Spain). Study design: A retrospective descriptive study was made of the biopsies performed between January 2007 and April 2009 in our Department of Oral Surgery. The following variables were recorded: age, the sex, location of the lesion, the biopsy technique, the reason for consultation, and the histological result obtained. Results: A total of 460 lesions amenable to histological analysis and corresponding to 450 patients were analyzed. The most frequently biopsied lesions were maxillary cysts, including particularly r…
Three-dimensional helical computed tomography in prenatal diagnosis of fetal skeletal dysplasia
2013
Objectives (1) To study the use and diagnostic value, as a complement to ultrasound, of helical computed tomography (helical CT) to differentiate normal fetuses from cases of skeletal dysplasia; (2) to define the most relevant indications for helical CT; and (3) to evaluate its diagnostic performance with respect to radiological criteria considered discriminatory. Methods This was a retrospective study from 2005 to 2008 in 67 pregnant women who underwent helical CT after 26 weeks of gestation for suspected fetal skeletal dysplasia due to fetal shortened long bones on ultrasound (≤ 10thpercentile), either alone or associated with other bone abnormalities. The results were compared with pedia…
Recurrent gastrointestinal haemorrhage from the distal duodenum
2006
In October 2004, a 69 year female patient presented with melena and anaemia (haemoglobin level 9 g/dl). The patient had been on warfarin due to construction of an aorto-bifemoral graft because of an aortic aneurysm and an …
Community water fluoridation and caries prevention: a critical review.
2006
The aim of this paper was to critically review the current role of community water fluoridation in preventing dental caries. Original articles and reviews published in English language from January 2001 to June 2006 were selected through MEDLINE database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. For the past 50 years community water fluoridation has been considered the milestone of caries prevention and as one of the major public health measures of the 20th century. However, it is now accepted that the primary cariostatic action of fluoride occurs after tooth eruption. Moreover, the caries reduction directly attributable to water fluoridation have declined in the…
276 Evaluation of cardiovascular risk and factors associated to risk under-evaluation in general practice
2011
Correlation between perceived cardiovascular risk (CVR) by physicians and real CVR is poorly known. Moreover, the underlying question of factors associated to risk misevaluation, especially for patients at high CVR and that could benefit of a lipid lowering therapy (LLT), remains unsolved. Objective and methodology This was an on-line non-interventional study conducted on a sample of 619 general practitioners. The aim was to describe the relation between physicians evaluated CVR and calculated CVR according to risk's scales. All consulting patients’ aged50 years old (YO) were included. Physicians had to complete a questionnaire and to assess patient's CVR on a 3 level scale (low, medium, an…
Severe Clostridium difficile infection with extremely high leucocytosis complicated by a concomitant bloodstream infection caused by Klebsiella pneum…
2020
Highlights • Exposure to antibiotics after surgery increase risk of Cl. difficile infection. • Sudden high leucocytosis may be sign of poor outcome in Cl. difficile case. • Oral Vancomycin could be responsible for the growth of bloodstream Kl. pneumonia.
