Renal resistive index: Beyond the hemodynamics
2020
We read with great interest the original article entitled “Prognostic significance of the renal resistive index in the primary prevention of type II diabetes” by Delsart et al1 In this issue of The Journal, the authors interestingly underlined the prognostic value of renal resistive index (RRI) in diabetic subjects and its role as an independent predictor of a first cardiovascular or renal event. Similar conclusions were previously obtained by others in different subsets of patients (hypertension, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure), in which intrarenal hemodynamic alterations showed to be independent predictors of cardiovascular events. It is likely that the mechanisms underlying ren…
In vitro effects of oil's fatty acids on T cell function in gestational diabetic pregnant women and their newborns 油类脂肪酸在体外对妊娠期糖尿病孕妇及其新生儿的T细胞功能的影响
2014
Background The aim of this investigation was to determine the in vitro effects of linseed, olive and Nigel oils on T cell proliferation and function in gestational diabetes. Methods Blood samples were collected from 40 control healthy and 32 gestational diabetic mothers and their newborns. Peripheral blood lymphocytes were isolated using a density gradient of Ficoll. T cell proliferation, interleukin-2 and -4 (IL-2, IL-4) secretion, fatty acid composition and intracellular oxidative status were investigated. Results Mitogen (Concanavalin A) stimulated lymphocyte proliferation, IL-2 secretion, intracellular reduced glutathione levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities were l…

A matter of fat: insulin resistance and oxidative stress
2012
Background Obesity is linked to insulin resistance (IR), which can lead to type 2 diabetes mellitus. Oxidative stress present in early obesity may favor the progression to comorbid conditions. Objective To examine the relationship between oxidative stress biomarkers and the severity of IR in a group of obese children. Methods Forty obese children with a body mass index (BMI) Z-score ≥ 2 were divided into two groups using the median obtained for the homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR). Anthropometric parameters (including body fat composition by bioelectrical impedance) and biochemical parameters were assessed. The following biomarkers of oxidative stress were measured: malondialdeh…
Glycaemic variability using continuous glucose monitoring and endothelial function in the metabolic syndrome and in Type 2 diabetes
2010
Diabet. Med. 27, 872–878 (2010) Abstract Aims Subjects who are at increased risk of developing diabetes may have increased glycaemic variability associated with endothelial dysfunction and possibly subclinical atherosclerosis, which may lead to increased cardiovascular risk observed at the time of diabetes diagnosis. To investigate this hypothesis, we measured endothelial function, carotid intima-media thickness and glycaemic variability using 48-h continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring in 3 groups of overweight or obese subjects – those without the metabolic syndrome, and those with the metabolic syndrome with or without newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. Methods Consecutive subjects, …
Real-Time Breath Analysis in Type 2 Diabetes Patients During Cognitive Effort
2013
The understanding the functional expression of exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has gradually expanded from the initial identification of breath pathological markers to direct expression of physiological activity. In the present study we investigated the potential application of breath analysis in real-time monitoring of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients versus control subjects while performing a cognitive task. T2DM is associated with cognitive impairment and neural deficits, because of insulin resistance and high expression of insulin receptors in the hippocampus. We set out to seek the evidence for mutual associations among breath exhale, on the one side, and T2DM and cog…
Antiketogene Wirkung von Xylit bei alloxandiabetischen Ratten

Surgical management of ameloblastoma. Review of literature
2019
Background Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic tumor that represents 1% of all tumors in the oral cavity and it is clinically classified in three types. Currently, solid and multi-cystic are considered locally aggressive, with high recurrence rates with conservative treatment. Material and methods Objective of the present review is to assess whether the surgical treatment should be conservative or radical. English articles published between 2009-2014, with available summary and in humans were included. Results 241 articles were found, 188 were excluded because analyzing. 53 articles were analyzed and finally 14 were selected for this review. Conclusions The optimal surgical treatment of amelobl…
