Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant (2015) constitutes an interesting contemporary reworking of the motif of melancholy. In the universe of the book – a combination of Arthurian setting with the elements of fantasy – people experience the peculiar state of melancholic oblivion brought upon them by the mysterious fog. Although this fog enables a peaceful coexistence of previous enemies, it also causes the feelings of overwhelming uneasiness and unidentified menace. Hierarchical perception of melody

Two experiments were designed to investigate the hierarchical perception of melodies. The hierarchical structure of tonal melodies is formally described in Lerdahl and Jackendoff's Generative Theory of Tonal Music (GTTM). The experiments were designed to assess different aspects of GTTM time span reduction quantitatively. Subjects were presented with pairs of melodies in a same-different task. A short novel and a longer original tonal melody could differ within the harmonic context at single tones on one of four time span reduction levels. Oral melanoacanthoma (MA) is a rare, benign pigmented lesion, similar to cutaneous MA, characterized by hyperplasia of spinous keratinocytes and dendritic melanocytes. The pathogenesis of oral MA remains uncertain, although its clinical behavior is suggestive of a reactive origin. The most common intraoral sites are the buccal mucosa, lip, palate and gingiva. The average age of presentation is 28 years, mainly in blacks, with a strong female predilection. EPR line shape simulations of CH3/SiO2 clathrates and comparison to CH3/N2O and CH3/SiO2 experiments reveal the motional conditions of the CH3 radical up to the unusual regime of its stability, the high-temperature diffusional regime, at 300 K. In the low-temperature region, the CH3 in clathrates is found to rotate around the in-plane axes even at as low temperatures as 3.8 K. Chloride intracellular channel 1 (CLIC1) is highly expressed and secreted by human glioblastoma cells and cell lines such as U87, initiating cell migration and tumor growth. Here, we examined whether CLIC1 could be transferred to human primary microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC). We previously reported that the oncogenic microRNA, miR-5096, increased the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by which it increased its own transfer from U87 to surrounding cells. Gandrīz katrs otrais cilvēks sastopas ar miega trūkumu, īpaši pēc 65 gadu vecuma. Miega traucējumi negatīvi ietekmē fiziskās, mentālās, sociālās un emocionālās funkcijas. Šī darba mērķis bija izpētīt literatūras datus par miega fāzēm un nozīmi, kā arī apskatīt un salīdzināt biežāk lietotos uztura bagātinātājus un bezrecepšu medikamentus, kas satur melatonīnu un baldriānu. Tika noskaidrots arī ārsta un farmaceitu viedoklis par šo medikamentu lietošanu bezmiega ārstēšanā. Iegūtie dati parādīja, ka gan melatonīna, gan baldriāna saturošie miega līdzekļi tiek lietoti vienlīdz bieži, taču medikamenti, kas satur melatonīnu, iedarbojas ātrāk.
