Optical quality of hyperopic and myopic phakic intraocular lenses
2013
Aims: To assess and compare the optical quality of the myopic and hyperopic implantable collamer lens (ICL) from its wavefront aberrations for different powers and pupil diameters. Settings and Design: Prospective study. Material and Methods: The wavefront aberrations of two myopic (−3 and −6 diopters (D)) and two hyperopic V4b ICLs (+3 and +6D) were measured in vitro . To assess and compare the optical quality of different powers of ICLs, we analyzed the root mean square (RMS) of total higher order aberrations (HOAs), trefoil, coma, tetrafoil, secondary astigmatism, and spherical aberration at 3- and 4.5-mm pupil. In addition, the point spread functions (PSFs) of each ICL evaluated were ca…
A large ameloblastic fibro-odontoma of the right mandible
2007
The ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare mixed odontogenic tumor. It occurs predominantly in children and young adults with no sex predilection and locates most often in the posterior segment of the mandible. A painless swelling is the most common clinical sign. Radiologically, ameloblastic fibro-odontoma shows a circumscribed radiolucency, which contains radio-opaque foci of various sizes and shapes. Histological examination reveals a fibrous soft tissue, islands of odontogenic epithelium and a disordered mixture of dental tissues. The tumor produces enamel or enamel matrix, dentin and cementum. The treatment of ameloblastic fibro-odontomas usually consists of enucleation or surgical cure…
Enameloid microstructure in the oldest known chondrichthyan teeth
2009
Botella, H., Donoghue, P.C.J and Martinez-Perez, C. 2009. The enameloid microstructure of the oldest known chondrichthyan teeth. — Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 90 (Suppl. 1): 103‐108 Previous studies on tooth enameloid microstructure in several chondrichthyan taxa spanning the phylogeny of the group provided support for the homology of chondrichthyan tooth enameloid. This hypothesis requires that a single crystallite enameloid (SCE) monolayer must be present in the teeth of the most primitive chondrichthyan. However, the dental microstructure of the earliest sharks has yet to be investigated. We have studied the tooth enameloid microstructure of the two oldest tooth-bearing shark species curr…
Le recherche de l'identité à deux voix : Haroun et Meursault
2017
In his novel entitled The Meursault Investigation (Meursault, contre-enquête) Kamel Daoud shows human weakness and anger against the religion, the same as they are depicted in Albert Camus’s works. His character, Haroun, who is a brother of the Arab killed in The Stranger by Camus, is in the quest for his identity. Being traumatized by his mother’s hold over him, he learns French in order to be able to express his disappointment over the world and his country where he feels as a stranger.

Modelling the evolution of periodicity in the periodical cicadas
2018
Background: Periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) have a life cycle that ends with the entire underground nymph population exhibiting a synchronized mass emergence to mate above ground. Previous studies have hypothesized that the periodical cicadas evolved from non-periodical cicadas by switching from a life-cycle length determined by body size to one determined by age. Questions: When can a mutation coding for fixed life-cycle length invade a resident population in which life-cycle length is variable? What determines the length of the fixed cycle? Methods: Numerical analysis of a mathematical model and simulations of an individual-based model. Results: If there is a sufficiently strong pred…

Comparative transcriptomics of albino and warningly‐coloured caterpillars
2021
Abstract Coloration is perhaps one of the most prominent adaptations for survival and reproduction of many taxa. Coloration is of particular importance for aposematic species, which rely on their coloring and patterning acting as a warning signal to deter predators. Most research has focused on the evolution of warning coloration by natural selection. However, little information is available for color mutants of aposematic species, particularly at the genomic level. Here, I compare the transcriptomes of albino mutant caterpillars of the aposematic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) to those of their full sibs having their distinctive orange‐black warning coloration. The results showed >29…
Liquid Structure Scenario of the Archetypal Supramolecular Deep Eutectic Solvent: Heptakis(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin/levulinic Acid
2023
The concept of supramolecular solvents has been recently introduced, and the extended liquid-state window accessible for mixtures of functionalized cyclodextrins (CDs) with hydrogen bond (HB) donor species, e.g., levulinic acid, led to the debut of supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRA-DES). These solvents retain CD’s inclusion ability and complement it with enhanced solvation effectiveness due to an extended HB network. However, so far, these promising features were not rationalized in terms of a microscopic description, thus hindering a more complete capitalization. This is the first joint experimental and computational study on the archetypal SUPRA-DES: heptakis- (2,6-di-O-methyl)…
