Numerical simulation and analysis of heat and mass transfer processes in metallurgical induction applications

2009

Comprehensive knowledge of the heat and mass transfer processes in the melt of induction applications is required to realize efficient metallurgical processes. Experimental and numerical studies of the melt flow in induction furnaces show that the flow pattern, which comprise several vortexes of the mean flow, and the temperature distribution in the melt are significantly influenced by low-frequency large scale flow oscillations. Two- and three-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations of the melt flow, using two-equation turbulence models based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes approach, do not predict the large scale periodic flow instabilities obtained from the experimental data. The economically important activity of metal processing can tend to contribute to the degradation of the environment. Smelting is an important source of contaminants, dispersing large quantities of potentially toxic elements (PTE) and coproducts into the environment. Soils in the vicinity of smelters frequently contain high concentrations of PTE. In terms of the quantities processed, the major PTE are iron (Fe), aluminium (Al), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn); of these Cu, Pb and Zn are, potentially, highly hazardous elements. Es wird uber die Synthese von methylsubstituierten, ein- und zweifach m-gewinkelten Oligophenylenen bis zum Kondensationsgrad 14 berichtet. Durch Anwendung chromatographischer Methoden konnten die Verbindungen rein isoliert werden. Gewinkelte Oligophenylene besitzen bei vergleichbarer Struktur einen niedrigeren Schmelzpunkt und eine bessere Loslichkeit als p-Oligophenylene. The synthesis of methyl-substituted oligophenylenes with one or two meta-bonds up to a polymerisation degree of 14 is described. The synthesis of triblock copolymers based on polysarcosine, poly-N-ε-t-butyloxycarbonyl-l-lysine, and poly-N-ε-t-trifluoroacetyl-l-lysine by ring-opening polymerization of the corresponding α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) is described. For the synthesis of N-ε-t-butyloxycarbonyl-l-lysine (lysine(Boc)) NCAs, an acid-free method using trimethylsilylchloride/triethylamine as hydrochloric acid (HCl) scavengers is presented. Processing-property relationships of polypropylene/ciprofloxacin fibers

In this work we prepared polypropylene (PP) fibers incorporating an antibiotic, i.e. ciprofloxacin (CFX), by melt spinning. In particular, PP has been compounded with CFX at different concentrations by using a counter-rotating twin screw compounder. The PP/CFX fibers have been spun by using a capillary rheometer operating under a constant extrusion speed. The effect of “online” hot drawing during the melt spinning or of an “offline” cold drawing on the properties of PP/CFX fibers were evaluated. Population genetic theory predicts that in small populations, random genetic drift will fix and accumulate slightly deleterious mutations, resulting in reduced reproductive output. This genetic load due to random drift (i.e., drift load) can increase the extinction risk of small populations. We studied the relationship between genetic variability (indicator of past population size) and reproductive output in eight isolated, natural populations of the hermaphroditic snail Lymnaea stagnalis.
