Can a snow structure model estimate snow characteristics relevant to reindeer husbandry?

Snow affects foraging conditions of reindeer e.g. by increasing the energy expenditures for moving and digging work or, in contrast, by making access of arboreal lichen easier. Still the studies concentrating on the role of the snow pack structure on reindeer population dynamics and reindeer management are few. Reduction of saturated fat in chocolate by using sunflower oil-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose based oleogels

The suitability of sunflower oil-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) based oleogel obtained by emulsion template approach as partial cocoa butter (CB) replacer in chocolates was investigated. A level of 50% CB replacement was optimum, as higher level of replacement affected the sensory appearance in comparison to the control chocolate (without added oleogel). Four levels of HPMC (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2%) were considered. Textural and calorimetric properties, as well as sensory properties obtained by Free Choice Profile of the formulated chocolates were investigated. Geochemistry and volatile content of magmas feeding explosive eruptions at Telica volcano (Nicaragua)

Telica volcano, in north-west Nicaragua, is a young stratovolcano of intermediate magma composition producing frequent Vulcanian to phreatic explosive eruptions. The Telica stratigraphic record also includes examples of (pre)historic sub-Plinian activity. To refine our knowledge of this very active volcano, weanalyzedmajor element composition and volatile content of melt inclusions fromsomestratigraphically significant Telica tephra deposits. Glacier drainage and sandur formation at Kötlujökull, South Iceland

Abstract Over a number of years research on a stretch of the southeastern glacier margin of Kotlujokull in South Iceland, 8 km in length, has focused on correlating the manner of glacier drainage with the genesis of sandar, exemplified by the recent evolution of the glacier foreland. The research has yielded the following results. During an initial period, beginning prior to 1945 and ending between 1966 and 1975, a belt of moraines about 1 km wide was destroyed in stages, except for a few remnants, by 11 outbreaks of subglacial meltwater at different times and locations along the glacier front. Recent Change—River Run-off and Ice Cover

This chapter compiles and assesses information on run-off and discharge from rivers within the Baltic Sea drainage basin. Some information is also available on ice duration on inland waterways. Although decadal and regional variability is large, no significant long-term change has been detected in total river run-off to the Baltic Sea over the past 500 years. A change in the timing of the spring flood has been observed due to changes in the timing of snowmelt . Change in temperature seems to explain change in run-off better than does precipitation. Later start dates for ice formation on waterways, and earlier ice break-up dates have resulted in shorter periods of ice cover.

Using 81Kr and Noble Gases to Characterize and Date Groundwater and Brines in the Baltic Artesian Basin on the One-Million-Year Timescale

Analyses for $^{81}$Kr and noble gases on groundwater from the deepest aquifer system of the Baltic Artesian Basin (BAB) were performed to determine groundwater ages and uncover the flow dynamics of the system on a timescale of several hundred thousand years. We find that the system is controlled by mixing of three distinct water masses: Interglacial or recent meteoric water $(\delta^{18}\text{O} \approx -10.4\unicode{x2030})$ with a poorly evolved chemical and noble gas signature, glacial meltwater $(\delta^{18}\text{O} \leq -18\unicode{x2030})$ with elevated noble gas concentrations, and an old, high-salinity brine component $(\delta^{18}\text{O} \geq -4.5\unicode{x2030}, \geq 90 \text{g …

Heterogeneity of volatile sources along the Halmahera arc, Indonesia

Owing to the comparative remoteness of the region, few ground-based studies of the volcanoes have been undertaken.
