P021 Heat working environment and risk of breast, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancer in the MCC-spain case contr…

2016

Occupational exposure to heat can affect the absorption of carcinogenic chemicals into the body, and the metabolism of sexual hormones. We explored the association between occupational exposure to heat and breast, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, colorectal, prostate, and stomach cancer in the MCC-Spain population based case-control study. Methods The analyses were based on 3047 controls, and 1499 breast, 1539 colorectal, 332 LLC, 1070 prostate, and 382 stomach cancer cases. Heat working environment from either natural or artificial sources was assessed with the MatEmEsp job-exposure matrix. Logistic regression models accounting for education, sex, geographic area, BMI (colorectal, prostate),…

Evaluation of the efficacy of low-level laser in improving the symptoms of burning mouth syndrome

2015

Background: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is common condition that affects menopause women, patients suffer from sever burning sensation. Up to now there is no definitive treatment for this disease. Present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of low-level laser (LLL) in improving t he symptoms of burning mouth syndrome. Material and Methods: Twenty patients with BMS were enrolled in this study; they were divided in two groups randomly. In the laser group, in each patient, 10 areas on the oral mucosa were selected and underwent LLL irradiation at a wavelength of 630 nm, and a power of 30 mW for 10 seconds twice a week for 4 weeks. In the placebo group, silent/off laser therapy was c…

Long-term effects of oral and transdermal hormone replacement therapy on plasma homocysteine levels.

2003

Objective To compare the long-term effects of oral and transdermal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on serum homocysteine levels in postmenopausal women. Design An open, prospective, controlled study. Seventy-five healthy postmenopausal women were recruited as eligible for the study. Fifty women seeking HRT were randomized to receive continuous 17beta-estradiol, either by oral (2 mg daily; n = 25) or transdermal (50 microg daily; n = 25) administration, plus 10 mg dydrogesterone daily for 14 days of each 28-day cycle. Twenty-five women unwilling to receive hormone treatment received only calcium supplementation, representing the control group. Fasting blood samples were analyzed at baselin…

Postmenopausal women with osteopenia and a healed wrist fracture have reduced physical function and quality of life compared to a matched, healthy co…

2013

Background Fractures lead to reduced physical function and quality of life (QOL), but little is known about postmenopausal women with osteopenia and a healed wrist fracture. The purpose was to evaluate physical function in terms of quadriceps strength, dynamic balance, physical capacity and QOL in postmenopausal women with osteopenia and a healed wrist fracture compared to a matched, healthy control group with no previous fracture. Methods Eighteen postmenopausal women with osteopenia (patients) (mean age 59.1 years, range 54 – 65) and a healed wrist fracture were matched to 18 healthy control subjects on age (mean age 58.5 years, range 51 – 65), height, weight and body mass index (BMI). Assessment of bioelectrical activity of pelvic floor muscles depending on the orientation of the pelvis in menopausal women with symptoms of stress u…

2017

Background Menopausal women often experience the prolapse of the uterus, bladder and rectum resulting from the failure and weakening of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM). Strengthening of the PFM through the standard exercises is recognized as an effective way of preventive measures and conservative treatment of the symptoms listed above, but still need to be improved. Aim The goal was the objective assessment of resting and functional bioelectrical activity of PFM in women during menopause and its comparison in three different positions of the pelvis: anterior pelvic tilt - position 1 (P1), posterior pelvic tilt - position 2 (P2), and neutral pelvic tilt - position 3 (P3). Design Prospective,…

Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis

2011

doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00608.x Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis Objectives:  The reduction in the level of oestrogen, typical in menopause, has some effect on the health of the oral cavity. In fact, post-menopausal women present more severe periodontal disease than pre-menopausal women. Numerous factors can be held to be responsible for this increase, among which are the effects of oestrogens on the oral epithelium, on the salivary glands, on bone tissue and on the endothelium. Our double blind study aims to evaluate the possible variations in oral microcirculation in post-menopausal women. Methods:  Twenty-seven women in post-menopau…

Dental considerations in pregnancy and menopause

2011

The present study offers a literature review of the main oral complications observed in women during pregnancy and menopause, and describes the different dental management protocols used during these periods and during lactation, according to the scientific literature. To this effect, a PubMed-Medline search was made, using the following key word combinations: “pregnant and dentistry”, “lactation and dentistry”, “postmenopausal and dentistry”, “menopausal and dentistry” and “oral bisphosphonates and dentistry”. The search was limited to reviews, metaanalyses and clinical guides in dental journals published over the last 10 years in English and Spanish. A total of 38 publications were evalua…

Effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on periodontal status of postmenopausal women.

2011

Summary Background The risks/benefits balance of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the periodontal status of a postmenopausal women group receiving HRT and to determine the effects of HRT on clinical measures of periodontal disease. Material/Methods Ninety-one postmenopausal women, 52 taking HRT (HRT+) and 39 not taking HRT (HRT−), completed the study. Clinical parameters measured included visible supragingival plaque, probing pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Gingival status was recorded as gingival bleeding on probing (BOP). Previous oral contraceptive use and current and past smoking status were also assessed. Res…

Management of depressive symptoms in peri- and postmenopausal women: EMAS position statement.

2019

Introduction: Globally, the total number of people with depression exceeds 300 million, and the incidence rate is 70 % greater in women. The perimenopause is considered to be a time of increased risk for the development of depressive symptoms and major depressive episodes. Aim: The aim of this position statement is to provide a comprehensive model of care for the management of depressive symptoms in perimenopausal and early menopausal women, including diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. The model integrates the care provided by all those involved in the management of mild or moderate depression in midlife women. Materials and methods: Literature review and consensus of expert opinion. Summa…
