Reading traffic signs while driving: Are linguistic word properties relevant in a complex, dynamic environment?
2019
When driving a vehicle, do we read the words displayed on traffic signs just as we do in more standard conditions? In the driving context, stimulus quality is generally worse, and reading has to be performed at the same time as we are doing other tasks. In the present work, we examined the effects of word frequency and word length on reading in such circumstances. A stimulus presentation mimicking the approach to the traffic sign increased the effect of word frequency, but not the effect of word length, on reading latency. In addition, performing the reading task while driving along a simulated route produced similar results. Therefore, in the context of the driving activity, the advantage …

Innovative visual design to assure information for all in transportation
2014
ICAP 2014, 28th International Congress of Applied Psychology, PARIS, FRANCE, 08-/07/2014 - 13/07/2014; This research aims to propose alternative visual design of audio railway disruption announcements in order at reducing handicap situations encountered by travelers who can't hear or understand oral messages (deaf, hearing-impaired or foreign people). Five announcements were translated into two visual modes: in French sign language (with a sign language avatar named Jade) and in animated graphical designs. Different combinations were tested in order to find the better compromise between spatial and temporal organization for the both visual messages. For spatial parameter, messages were eith…
Du verbe instrumental dans la musique subsaharienne
2021
Sub-Saharan music results from the spoken language/instrumental language relation, directed by an oral culture. In this culture, these languages transmit ? beyond their singularities ? messages thanks to either a coded signal known by the linguistic community or previously defined among a group of individuals, or is used as a true meta-language copied on the articulated and usual language used every day. Here, an instrumental musical speech can then imitate and reproduce the tonal inflexions of the language to make its matter understandable. This fact is the natural result of a strong interaction and interrelation between the spoken language and the music as well as the conception that the …
Search for transient sources with the ANTARES and KM3NeT neutrino telescopes in the multi-messenger astronomy era
2020
A survey on peer-to-peer SIP based communication systems
2010
Published version of an article from the journal: Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications. The original publication is available at Spingerlink. http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12083-009-0064-4 Recently, both academia and industry have initiated research projects directed on integration of P2PSIP paradigm into communication systems. In this paradigm, P2P network stores most of the network information on each participating peer without help of the central servers. The concept of self-configuration, self-establishment greatly improves the robustness of the network system compared with the traditional Client/Server based systems. In this paper, we survey P2PSIP solutions proposed recently both in …
Traffic management and user perception: an analysis of Variable Message Signs using Fuzzy Logic
2009
Variable message signs have today become an indispensable tool for managing traffic in urban and suburban areas, such as sending real-time information to motorists in transit along roads where panels are positioned. The study draws on drivers’ response to a series of interviews conducted in the city of Brescia. The interviews showed that a large proportion of drivers does not read the messages, and indeed very often does not even remember having seeing the sign. The marginal usefulness of these facilities can probably be attributed to the fact that the panels are constantly used to display messages devoid of immediate interest (eg, greetings, penalties for traffic violations, general inform…
Hierarchical Parallelization of an H.264/AVC Video Encoder
2006
Last generation video encoding standards increase computing demands in order to reach the limits on compression efficiency. This is particularly the case of H.264/AVC specification that is gaining interest in industry. We are interested in applying parallel processing to H.264 encoders in order to fulfill the computation requirements imposed by stressing applications like video on demand, videoconference, live broadcast, etc. Given a delivered video quality and bit rate, the main complexity parameters are image resolution, frame rate and latency. These parameters can still be pushed forward in such a way that special purpose hardware solutions are not available. Parallel processing based on…
Network Reconfiguration Suitability for Scientific Applications
2008
This paper analyzes the communication pattern of several scientific applications and how they can make profit of network reconfiguration in order to adapt network topology to the communication needs so that total execution time is reduced. By using an analysis methodology based on real application executions, we study the variation of the required communication bandwidth with time and also the global interprocedural communication patterns. Results show that required bandwidth between each pair of processes does not significantly fluctuates, leading to a constant use of the links and therefore discouraging dynamic reconfigurations of the network during execution time. Nevertheless, the group…
A Semantic Publish/Subscribe Approach for U-VR Systems Interoperation
2008
As ubiquitous virtual reality (U-VR) systems become more and more popular and several systems coexist all together, sharing events between them in order to improve the user experience and increase their scope and functionality will be mandatory. Since U-VR systems have a dynamic and decoupled nature, and they have their own event model, we propose in this paper a semantic publish/subscribe infrastructure that lies on a description logics reasoner and OWL ontologies for managing heterogeneous event models and performing the matching of events and subscriptions in such U-VR systems.
