The Impossible Portait. Georges Perec and His Condottiere
2016
Continuous and more or less veiled references, descriptions, inventions, images characterize the poetry of Georges Perec. But above all one image is significant not only to his poetics but to himself: that of Le Condottière, translated in english as Portrait of a Man. On 2012, thirty years after Perec’s death, the last piece of his literary image was discovered. Actually, it is the first image of this complex puzzle, the first time Gaspard Winckler, Perec’s recurrent alter-ego, appeared on the scene. Three main characters stay on the stage of Portrait of a Man: Gaspard Winckler, Antonello da Messina and the unknown warlord himself. Behind them stays, of course, Perec, the “character” into w…
«Nolite extollere in altum cornu vestrum».
2022
This article addresses a series of hypothesis concerning the octagonal space indicated in Guarino Guarini’s drawings of the Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Messina in his Architettura Civile. The façade of the church was completed around 1660 by Guarino Guarini and presented a «prodigiously high» bell tower at the corner, which collapsed during the 1693 earthquake and was later rebuilt shorter. The entire church was destroyed during the 1908 earthquake. Guarini’s drawings published in his treatise suggest that there must have been an octagonal chapel with columns at the corners under the tower; perhaps it was the baptistery of the church. Alternatively, the octagon can be identified …
LO STUDIO DELLE MATRICI GEOMETRICHE DEL PROGETTO PER LA CHIESA DEI PADRI SOMASCHI A MESSINA ATTRAVERSO LA MODELLAZIONE DIGITALE
2016

Timing of the emergence of the Europe-Sicily bridge (40-17 cal ka BP) and its implications for the spread of modern humans
2014
The submerged sill in the Strait of Messina, which is located today at a minimum depth of 81 m below sea level (bsl), represents the only land connection between Sicily and mainland Italy (and thus Europe) during the last lowstand when the sea level locally stood at about 126 m bsl. Today, the sea crossing to Sicily, although it is less than 4 km at the narrowest point, faces hazardous sea conditions, made famous by the myth of Scylla and Charybdis. Through a multidisciplinary research project, we document the timing and mode of emergence of this land connection during the last 40 kyr. The integrated analysis takes into consideration morphobathymetric and lithological data, and relative sea…

2020
Luigi Moretti (Rome 1906 - Capraia 1973) was one of the undisputed protagonists of the history of architecture in Italy during the twentieth century. This essay attempts to investigate one of his projects never built dating back to 1936, the Casa del Balilla in Messina, developing a method based essentially on critical redrawing, starting from the exhaustive graphic-design documentation of the time, found in the Central Archive of the state. An exegetical process which, in an attempt to delineate those spatial, architectural and urban connections that never materialized, reveals the attention shown by Moretti to the peculiarities of the place and to man as user, who is assumed as the center…
