Nephrolithiasis, bone mineral density, osteoporosis, and fractures: a systematic review and comparative meta-analysis

2016

Summary: Our meta-analysis demonstrates that people with nephrolithiasis have decreased bone mineral density, an increased odds of osteoporosis, and potentially an elevated risk of fractures. Introduction: People with nephrolithiasis might be at risk of reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures, but the data is equivocal. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate if patients with nephrolithiasis have worse bone health outcomes (BMD), osteoporosis, and fractures versus healthy controls (HCs). Methods: Two investigators searched major databases for articles reporting BMD (expressed as g/cm2 or a T- or Z-score), osteoporosis or fractures in a sample of people with nephrolithiasis, and…

Femtosecond laser versus mechanical microkeratome laser in situ keratomileusis for myopia: Metaanalysis of randomized controlled trials.

2011

Purpose To examine differences in efficacy, accuracy, safety, and changes in aberrations between femtosecond and mechanical microkeratome laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopia. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai First People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China. Design Evidence-based manuscript. Methods Data sources, including PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, were searched to identify potentially relevant prospective randomized controlled trials. Primary outcome measures were efficacy (uncorrected distance visual acuity ≥20/20), accuracy (±0.50 diopter mean spherical equivalent), and safety (loss of ≥2 l…

The effect of exposure to radiofrequency fields on cancer risk in the general and working population: A protocol for a systematic review of human obs…

2021

Highlights • RF-EMF was classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (2B) in May 2011 • A systematic review of all subject-relevant epidemiological studies is now needed. • A detailed protocol ensures the review's transparency, utility and credibility. • Original study validity will be evaluated with a customized OHAT risk of bias tool. • Internal coherence and external plausibility will inform conclusions.

Effectiveness and safety of once-daily aminoglycosides: A meta-analysis

1996

The effectiveness and safety of once-daily versus several-times-daily aminoglycosides were studied in a meta-analysis. MEDLINE for 1988 to 1995 was searched, and additional studies were identified from review articles and references in retrieved articles. Studies selected for meta-analysis were randomized controlled clinical trials in nonneutropenic adult patients comparing the clinical effectiveness or nephrotoxicity or ototoxicity of once-daily with several-times-daily aminoglycosides. Differences between groups were expressed as odds ratios. The results were combined by the procedure of Mantel and Haenszel, and 95% confidence intervals and exact confidence intervals were computed. An odd…

Cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality in adults diagnosed with cancer systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

INTRODUCTION The inverse association between cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality in apparently healthy populations has been previously reported; however, the existence of this association among adults diagnosed with cancer is unclear. AIM To determine the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and all-cause mortality in adults diagnosed with cancer. METHODS Medline, Embase, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched. Eligible prospective cohort studies that examined the association of cardiorespiratory fitness with all-cause mortality in adults diagnosed with cancer were included. Hazard ratios (HRs) with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted from studie…

Risk of thromboembolism with thrombopoietin receptor agonists in adult patients with thrombocytopenia: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomi…

2012

Background and objective: Thrombopoietin receptor (TPOr) agonists (romiplostim and eltrombopag) are a new approach for the treatment of thrombocytopenia-associated conditions. They promote megakaryocyte differentiation, proliferation and platelet production. In the European Union, both are orphan drugs with an indication restricted to splenectomized immune thrombocytopenic purpura patients who are refractory to other treatments. Due to increasing platelet counts, these drugs may represent a risk for thromboembolic complications. We analyzed whether TPOr agonists affect thromboembolisms occurrence in adult thrombocytopenic patients. Materials and methods: We conducted a systematic review and…

The effect of interferon on the liver in chronic hepatitis C: a quantitative evaluation of histology by meta-analysis.

1997

Several randomized clinical trials of interferon in chronic hepatitis C have examined the histological changes in paired biopsy specimens. We have attempted a quantitative evaluation by meta-analysis.Randomized Clinical Trials found by MEDLINE search were included if: a) they compared different IFN regimens with non-active treatment or with each other, b) they obtained biopsies before starting and at the time of stopping IFN in a sizable proportion of the treated and control patients, and c) they assessed the biopsy-specimens semi-quantitatively according to Scheuer's numerical scoring system or Knodell's Histological Activity Index, with quantitation of fibrosis and of lobular, portal and …

Treatment of Bladder Stones in Adults and Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis on Behalf of the European Association of Urology Urolithias…

2019

Bladder stones (BS) constitute 5% of urinary stones. Currently, there is no systematic review of their treatment. To assess the efficacy (primary outcome: stone-free rate [SFR]) and morbidity of BS treatments. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the European Association of Urology Guidelines Office. Database searches (1970-2019) were screened, abstracted, and assessed for risk of bias for comparative randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and nonrandomised studies (NRSs) with ≥10 patients per group. Quality of evidence (QoE) was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool.A total of 2742 abstracts and 59 full-text article…

Efficacy and acceptability of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for non-specific chronic low back pain: a protocol for a systemat…

2020

Abstract Background Despite the enormous financial and humanistic burden of chronic low back pain (CLBP), there is little consensus on what constitutes the best treatment options from a multitude of competing interventions. The objective of this network meta-analysis (NMA) is to determine the relative efficacy and acceptability of primary care treatments for non-specific CLBP, with the overarching aim of providing a comprehensive evidence base for informing treatment decisions. Methods We will perform a systematic search to identify randomised controlled trials of interventions endorsed in primary care guidelines for the treatment of non-specific CLBP in adults. Information sources searched…

Progestogens to prevent preterm birth in twin pregnancies:an individual participant data meta-analysis of randomized trials

2012

Abstract Background Preterm birth is the principal factor contributing to adverse outcomes in multiple pregnancies. Randomized controlled trials of progestogens to prevent preterm birth in twin pregnancies have shown no clear benefits. However, individual studies have not had sufficient power to evaluate potential benefits in women at particular high risk of early delivery (for example, women with a previous preterm birth or short cervix) or to determine adverse effects for rare outcomes such as intrauterine death. Methods/design We propose an individual participant data meta-analysis of high quality randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of progestogen treatment in women with …
