High temperature alloy chloridation at 850°C. Part I: Comparison of Ni-based and Fe-based alloy behaviour

2007

Eight alloys were tested under Ar/Cl 2 atmosphere at 850 °C for 15 min and 1 h. Their gross and net weights were evaluated together with the base metal consumption. Macroscopic and microscopic micrographs, associated with chemical analyses and X-ray diffraction gave the composition and microstructure of the corrosion products. Huge differences were observed if one compared the nickel based alloy behaviour to that of the iron based alloy. Molybdenum and tungsten could also play a role, but it was not clearly defined until now. A tentative evaluation of the best candidates will be given, according the experimental conditions of this work and the chosen criteria. A corrosion index was establis…

Corrosion protection of Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets by zinc phosphate surface conversion coatings

2001

Abstract The use of protective zinc phosphate top coatings to protect Nd–Fe–B type permanent magnets against corrosion is discussed. The progress of the phosphatisation process has been tested by simultaneous measurement of pH near surface, corrosion potential, substrate mass loss and phosphate coating mass gain. The corrosion behaviour of the magnet in phosphate solution was analyzed by the anodic polarization technique and the general resistance of the magnet to corrosion was evaluated by the Akimov drop test. It is shown that immersion of the magnet in the acidified (pH=2) phosphating solution containing Zn(II), nitrate and fluoride ions resulted in the formation of well adhered, thin an…

The formation of intermetallics in dissimilar Ti6Al4V/copper/AISI 316 L electron beam and Nd:YAG laser joints

2011

Abstract The welds of titanium alloys with steels suffer from the brittleness of resulting intermetallic compounds. In present study, we report the feasibility of Ti6Al4V to stainless steel AISI 316L welding through pure copper interlayer carried out by electron beam and pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The nature and the localization of intermetallic phases in these welds have been studied by SEM, EDS, XRD and microhardness measurements. The simplified scenario of weld formation has been proposed in order to understand the mechanism of weld formation and to explain the way local phase content determines the mechanical properties. It can be concluded that the insertion of 500 μm pure copper interlayer …

Synthesis of nanocrystalline NbAl3 by mechanical and field activation

2001

Abstract The mechanically-activated, field-activated, and pressure-assisted synthesis (MAFAPAS) process, which combines the simultaneous synthesis and densification of nanophase materials, was utilized to produce nanocrystalline NbAl3 material from Nb+3Al mechanically activated powders. Nb+3Al elemental powders were co-milled for a short time in a specially designed planetary ball mill to obtain nanoscale distributed reactants but to avoid the formation of any product phases. These were then subjected to high AC currents (1500–1650 A) and uniaxial pressures (56–84 MPa). Under these conditions, a reaction is initiated by field activation and completed within a short period of time (3–6 min).…

Oxidation behavior of γ-TiAl coated with zirconia thermal barriers

2002

Abstract The applicability of the thermal barrier coating concept, which is an established concept for Ni-base alloys, was investigated for the first time for γ-TiAl. As potential bond coats, the following surface treatments were applied: Al-diffusion coating, Al-diffusion coating combined with short term pre-oxidation in air, short term pre-oxidation in oxygen of a rough surface finish γ-TiAl sample without aluminide coating. For the purpose of lowering the temperature of the γ-TiAl substrate surface, and thus, to prolong the life time, a zirconia thermal barrier coating (TBC) was applied on top of the above-mentioned modified TiAl surfaces. Oxidation resistance of the modified γ-TiAl allo…

Inverse growth transport in thermal chromia scales on Fe–15Cr steels in oxygen and in water vapour and its effect on scale adhesion

2007

Chromia scales of near equivalent thickness were thermally grown on Fe–15Cr steels in 16O2 followed by 18O2 and in H216O followed by H218O. SIMS oxygen isotope profiles showed that oxidation in oxygen proceeded by outward chromium transport, whereas oxidation in H2O involved inward transport of hydroxide species. Adhesion measurements using room temperature tensile testing could quantify adhesion energy: 20 J m−2 for O2-grown scales and 80 J m−2 for scales formed in H2O, a result of this mass transport inversion.

Sintered (Nd, Tb)–(Fe, Ti)–B+C permanent magnets

2001

Abstract This paper undertakes a study of the effect of carbon addition on the magnetic properties, the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Nd14.60Tb0.20Fe77.56Ti1.24B6.40+C sintered permanent magnets. It is shown that a 0.12 wt.% C addition increase the remanence and the maximum energy product and reduces (slightly) the intrinsic coercivity. The corrosion resistance in atmospheric environment is also significantly improved by this element.

Synthesis of Nd:YAG nanopowder using the citrate method with microwave irradiation

2010

Abstract Nd:YAG nanopowders were prepared using the Pechini process with microwave irradiation ( MWs ). A reference sample was also prepared using conventional heating. XRD pattern analysis showed that nanopowder obtained by means of conventional heating and calcination for 1 h at 900 °C has a structure made up of the garnet phase together with the hexagonal phase that disappeared after two additional hours of thermal treatment. The MWs powder calcined for 1 h consists of the single garnet phase. SAXS data analysis indicated that nanoparticles are characterized by a sharp interface. TEM investigation showed crystalline particles with remarkable agglomeration in both samples, although a more…

Synthesis and characterization of mesoporous Mn-MCM-41 materials

2011

Si { 1 H} CP-MAS NMR X-ray photo-emission spectroscopy a b s t r a c t MCM-41 has been synthesized at two different pH using cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant as template and adding the silica precursor to aqueous solutions containing CTAB. The obtained solids were calcined at 600 ◦ C for 4 h. Mn-MCM-41 powders with different Mn/Si molar ratios were prepared using the incipient wetness method, followed by calcination at 550 ◦C for 5 h. At the end of the impregnation process the powders colour changed from white to brown whose intensity depends on manganese quantity. The materials characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption, 29 Si Cross Polarization–Mag…

Influence of sintering temperature on microstructure of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 ceramics

2021

Abstract Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT)-based compositions are among the most promising lead-free ferroelectrics. Although studies of modification of NBT-based compositions’ properties are a hot topic, there has been very little attention paid to their characterization from the standpoint of ceramics and the process of producing them. Here, we report on comprehensive analysis of the influence of sintering temperature across a wide temperature range (1020–1240 °C) on the complete microstructure and chemical content of NBT ceramics produced by solid state sintering, which is dominating in producing of NBT ceramics. Thorough attention is paid to the grain size distribution, porosity, and inhomogeneity. …
