Some decisional problems on rational relations

1997

Abstract In this paper we prove that the problem of deciding whether a deterministic rational relation is star-free is recursively solvable, although the same problem for any rational relation is undecidable. We also prove that a rational relation is star-free if and only if it is aperiodic and deterministic.

Through-space spin-spin coupling in acetylenic systems. Ab initio and DFT calculations

2003

Abstract: We have investigated, by means of ab initio and DFT calculations, the magnitude of through-space spin-spin couplings ( J CH and J HH ) in CH/π bonded van der Waals dimers involving acetylene, and in a structurally related covalent compound (4-ethynylphenanthrene). Within regions where the interaction is stabilizing J HH couplings are very small (< 0.1 Hz) for all complexes. In the acetylene-methane complex J CH is also very small, whereas in the acetylene-benzene complex and the acetylene dimer it shows a relatively large dependence on the tilt angle from the T-shaped arrangement, for which the smallest values are calculated, to a parallel slipped arrangement where J CH is ca. 0.5…

<title>Electronic eye occluder with time-counting and reflection control</title>

2008

ABSTRACT In pediatric ophthalmology 2 – 3 % of all the children are impacted by a visual pathology – amblyopia. It develops if a clear image isn’t presented to the retina during an early stage of the developmen t of the visual system. A common way of treating this pathology is to cover the better-seeing eye to force the „lazy” eye to learn seeing. However, children are often reluctant to wear such an occluder because they are as hamed or simply because they find it inconvenient. This fact requires to find a way how to track the regi me of occlusion because results of occlus ion is a hint that the actual regime of occlusion isn’t that what the optometrist has recommended. We design an electr…

An example of interplay between Physics and Mathematics: Exact resolution of a new class of Riccati Equations

2017

A novel recipe for exactly solving in finite terms a class of special differential Riccati equations is reported. Our procedure is entirely based on a successful resolution strategy quite recently applied to quantum dynamical time-dependent SU(2) problems. The general integral of exemplary differential Riccati equations, not previously considered in the specialized literature, is explicitly determined to illustrate both mathematical usefulness and easiness of applicability of our proposed treatment. The possibility of exploiting the general integral of a given differential Riccati equation to solve an SU(2) quantum dynamical problem, is succinctly pointed out.

Sensor Fusion Combining 3-D and 2-D for Depth Data Enhancement

2012

Time-of-Flight (ToF) cameras are known to be cost-efficient 3-D sensing systems capable of providing full scene depth information at a high frame rate. Among many other advantages, ToF cameras are able to provide distance information regardless of the illumination conditions and with no texture dependency, which makes them very suitable for computer vision and robotic applications where reliable distance measurements are required. However, the resolution of the given depth maps is far below the resolution given by standard 2-D video cameras which, indeed, restricts the use of ToF cameras in real applications such as those for safety and surveillance. In this thesis, we therefore investigate…

Blind Radio Tomography

2018

From the attenuation measurements collected by a network of spatially distributed sensors, radio tomography constructs spatial loss fields (SLFs) that quantify absorption of radiofrequency waves at each location. These SLFs can be used for interference prediction in (possibly cognitive) wireless communication networks, for environmental monitoring or intrusion detection in surveillance applications, for through-the-wall imaging, for survivor localization after earthquakes or fires, etc. The cornerstone of radio tomography is to model attenuation as the bidimensional integral of the SLF of interest scaled by a weight function. Unfortunately, existing approaches (i) rely on heuristic assumpti…

A search for t[bar over t] resonances in lepton+jets events with highly boosted top quarks collected in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS de…

2012

A search for resonant production of high-mass top-quark pairs is performed on 2.05 fb[superscript −1] of proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV collected in 2011 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This analysis of the lepton+jets final state is specifically designed for the particular topology that arises from the decay of highly boosted top quarks. The observed t[bar over t] invariant mass spectrum is found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction and 95% credibility level upper limits are derived on the t[bar over t] production rate through new massive states. An upper limit of 0.7 pb is set on the production cross section times branching fraction of a narr…

Search for a heavy top-quark partner in final states with two leptons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

2012

The results of a search for direct pair production of heavy top-quark partners in 4.7 fb[superscript −1] of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC are reported. Heavy top-quark partners decaying into a top quark and a neutral non-interacting particle are searched for in events with two leptons in the final state. No excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are placed on the mass of a supersymmetric scalar top and of a spin-1/2 top-quark partner. A spin-1/2 top-quark partner with a mass between 300 GeV and 480 GeV, decaying to a top quark and a neutral non-interacting particle lighter than 100 GeV, is excluded …

Measurement of the W boson polarization in top quark decays with the ATLAS detector

2012

This paper presents measurements of the polarization of W bosons in top quark decays, derived from t¯t events with missing transverse momentum, one charged lepton and at least four jets, or two charged leptons and at least two jets. Data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV were collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb−1. The measured fractions of longitudinally, left- and right-handed polarization are F0 = 0.67 ± 0.07, FL = 0.32 ± 0.04 and FR = 0.01 ± 0.05, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. As the polarization of the W bosons in top quark decays is sensitive to the Wtb vertex Lorentz structure and…
