Spectral clustering with the probabilistic cluster kernel

2015

Abstract This letter introduces a probabilistic cluster kernel for data clustering. The proposed kernel is computed with the composition of dot products between the posterior probabilities obtained via GMM clustering. The kernel is directly learned from the data, is parameter-free, and captures the data manifold structure at different scales. The projections in the kernel space induced by this kernel are useful for general feature extraction purposes and are here exploited in spectral clustering with the canonical k-means. The kernel structure, informative content and optimality are studied. Analysis and performance are illustrated in several real datasets.

Use of H.264 real-time video encoding to reduce display wall system bandwidth consumption

2015

This paper compares the DXT and JPEG image compression techniques used in display wall solutions SAGE and DisplayCluster with hardware accelerated H.264 video encoding that is used in the display wall system developed by the authors of this paper. The obtained processing power usage and generated bandwidth measurements presented in this paper demonstrate that hardware accelerated H.264 encoding offers multiple benefits over software implemented H.264, DXT and JPEG.

Text Classification Using Novel “Anti-Bayesian” Techniques

2015

This paper presents a non-traditional “Anti-Bayesian” solution for the traditional Text Classification (TC) problem. Historically, all the recorded TC schemes work using the fundamental paradigm that once the statistical features are inferred from the syntactic/semantic indicators, the classifiers themselves are the well-established statistical ones. In this paper, we shall demonstrate that by virtue of the skewed distributions of the features, one could advantageously work with information latent in certain “non-central” quantiles (i.e., those distant from the mean) of the distributions. We, indeed, demonstrate that such classifiers exist and are attainable, and show that the design and im…

Experimental evaluation of topological-based fitness functions to detect complexes in PPI networks

2012

The detection of groups of proteins sharing common biological features is an important research issue, intensively investigated in the last few years, because of the insights it can give in understanding cell behavior. In this paper we present an extensive experimental evaluation campaign aiming at exploring the capability of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to find clusters in protein-protein interaction networks, when different topological-based fitness functions are employed. A complete experimentation on the yeast protein-protein interaction network, along with a comparative evaluation of the effectiveness in detecting true complexes on the yeast and human networks, reveals GAs as a feasible an…

Digital selection of composite resin shade using cross polarized photography and a standardized white balance gray reference card

2021

Purpose The aim of the present case report was to describe, through a clinical case, a step-by-step technique, for the digital selection of composite resin shades using cross polarization and white balance employing a standardized reference card. Case Description After intraoral impression, a digital diagnostic wax up was developed. A 3D printed cast was used to fabricate a lingual polyvinyl siloxane matrix. First a cross-polarized image of the contralateral central incisor was taken in RAW format, using a gray reference card. The digital image was manipulated using this card as a reference, to obtain reliable color values. The obtained color values, from the contralateral central incisor, …

<title>Fast motion estimation based on spatio-temporal Gabor filters: parallel implementation on multi-DSP</title>

2000

The aim of our work is to implement a system of motion estimation in image sequences processing on DSP's: fast motion estimation based on Gabor spatio-temporal filters. Our approach consists to calculate optical flow using an energy-based method, named combined filtering which associates the energetic responses of Gabor spatio- temporal filters organized in triads. For this purpose, we applicate a technique developed by the Laboratory LIS in France, inspired from the architecture of Heeger. To reduce the computation time, we present also a parallel implementation of the algorithm on a multi-DSP architecture using SynDEx tool which is a programming environment to generate optimized distribut…

Embedded Real-Time Surveillance Using Multimodal Mean Background Modeling

2008

Automated video surveillance applications require accurate separation of foreground and background image content. Cost-sensitive embedded platforms place real-time performance and efficiency demands on techniques to accomplish this task. In this chapter, we evaluate pixel-level foreground extraction techniques for a low-cost integrated surveillance system. We introduce a new adaptive background modeling technique, multimodal mean (MM), which balances accuracy, performance, and efficiency to meet embedded system requirements. Our evaluation compares several pixel-level foreground extraction techniques in terms of their computation and storage requirements, and functional accuracy for three r…

Directive local color transfer based on dynamic look-up table

2019

Abstract Color transfer in image processing usually suffers from misleading color mapping and loss of details. This paper presents a novel directive local color transfer method based on dynamic look-up table (D-DLT) to solve these problems in two steps. First, a directive mapping between the source and the reference image is established based on the salient detection and the color clusters to obtain directive color transfer intention. Then, dynamic look-up tables are created according to the color clusters to preserve the details, which can suppress pseudo contours and avoid detail loss. Subjective and objective assessments are presented to verify the feasibility and the availability of the…

Benchmarking non-photorealistic rendering of portraits

2017

We present a set of images for helping NPR practitioners evaluate their image-based portrait stylisation algorithms. Using a standard set both facilitates comparisons with other methods and helps ensure that presented results are representative. We give two levels of difficulty, each consisting of 20 images selected systematically so as to provide good coverage of several possible portrait characteristics. We applied three existing portrait-specific stylisation algorithms, two general-purpose stylisation algorithms, and one general learning based stylisation algorithm to the first level of the benchmark, corresponding to the type of constrained images that have often been used in portrait-s…

Use of the software ‘Poser4’ in reconstruction of accident and crime scenes

2000

The reconstruction of accident and crime scenes demands the full attention of the forensic working physician. Description by words is often difficult and liable to be misunderstood. Reconstruction in the original places of events are expensive and in some cases impossible. Computer graphics and animations give the possibility to construct the original course of events. Poser4 is a software package to perform these reconstructions in an easy and vivid way. We investigated the possibilities of reconstructing an accident with this software.
