Making Reshoring Decisions - the Case of a Norwegian Manufacturing Firm

2018

Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2018 Relocating activities to low-cost countries has been, and still is, a prevalent method of reducing production costs for manufacturing companies. In recent years, however, many companies have reconsidered this strategy, and started to move activities back to their home country. Opportunities to reduce labor costs through automation have certainly contributed to this process. The rationale behind the phenomenon, called \reshoring", has been discussed to a large extent in current research literature. How companies make such reshoring decisions, on the other hand, is generally under-researched (Wies…

Use of Obeya Visual Room in Entrepreneurial Decision-making

2017

Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2017 Entrepreneurs attempting to develop ideas outside the boundaries of organisations face challenges (e.g. high uncertainty and complexity levels, resource constraints, etc.) that might lead to failure due to different reasons, one of which is poor decision-making. Consecutively, due to constant changes in customer and market needs, entrepreneurial decisions must be taken rapidly. Hence, entrepreneurs need to take rational and effective decisions in order to succeed. Based on the highlighted problem, this study aims to investigate the impact of two approaches, experimentation and visualisation, to …

Evaluating New Market Opportunities : A case study of the Norwegian oil & gas industry

2017

Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management - University of Agder 2017 The objective for this thesis is to examine the composition of internal and external factors that shape the industry, and how such a combination can benefit firms in seeking potential markets. To answer this combination this thesis proposes a tool, EPM (Evaluation of Potential Markets). This tool offers a structured approach to evaluate new market opportunities, and seeks to determine the source of competitive advantage on the basis of fundamentals from two dominant theories within strategic management: Resource-based view of the firm (RBV) and Porter’s industry analysis. EPM is assigned to a case stud…

Implementing Performance Management - a Bottom-up Perspective : A CASE STUDY OF A MANUFACTURING FIRM

2018

Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2018 In 2016, a world-class manufacturing plant, determined to remain competitive in the future, develop a business system to spread their vision and values throughout the organization. This business, inspired by principles from both Lean and Toyota Production System, has greatly emphasized the Kaizen Philosophy – where subordinates play a key role in the optimization of their work processes. This led to a plethora of process improvements, yet as the lack of focus was prominent, and the impact of these improvement efforts was hard to measure. Management acknowledged a need for strategic directions, a…

Profittstyring med Target Costing i eiendomsutviklingsbransjen : Et kvalitativt casestudie av Target Costing sitt potensiale innen eiendomsutviklings…

2021

Master's thesis in Industrial economics and technology management (IND590) Masteroppgaven omhandler arbeidsmetodikken, Target Costing, og undersøker anvendbar-heten og potensialet tilknyttet å benytte metodikken innen eiendomsutviklingsbransjen.

Risk and reward Sharing Partnerships : A Study of Cross-Industry Adaptation from the Aviation Industry to Oil & Offshore

2019

Master's thesis Industrial Economics and Technology Management IND590 - University of Agder 2019 After the 2014 drop in oil prices, there was a need for several organizations in the Norwegian oil and offshore sector to optimize their operations. One of these companies, MacGregor AS, wished to innovate their supply chains to face certain challenges. One solution they considered was to adopt a partnership model from the aerospace industry called risk and reward sharing partnerships (RRSP). Traditional procurement strategies usually involve a buyer and a supplier. The buyer purchases a good or service from the supplier, and further refines the product before selling it to customer. However, in…

2021

Master's thesis in Industrial economics and technology management (IND590) Best Value Procurement (BVP) is an innovative procurement method that aims to shift the focus from price to quality when selecting suppliers. The method is new in Norway, and Direktoratet for forvaltning og økonomistyring (DFØ) facilitates the testing of the method in the public sector. From conversations with employees in the construction industry, it emerged that traditional contracts tend to lock the rules early in the project. With BVP as a starting point, it was desirable to determine how to ensure a sound basis for decision-making to further prepare a solution, before signing the contract. The study addresses k…
