Alternative measures of body composition and wage premium: New evidence from Indonesia

This paper examines the relationship between body composition and earnings in a developing country setting. We use body mass index, waist circumference and hip circumference. Exploiting the panel structure of our longitudinal survey, we find that along with BMI, waist circumference is related to higher earnings in Indonesia. peerReviewed
Teacher emotional support in relation to social competence in preschool classrooms

The present study aimed to investigate the associations between teachers’ observed emotional support and social competence among Finnish pre-schoolers (6-year-olds). The quality of emotional support was observed using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System Pre-K in 47 preschool classrooms twice across the preschool year. Teachers rated children’s social competence in autumn and again in spring, using the Multisource Assessment of Social Competence Scale (MASCS), which produced sum scores for cooperating skills, empathy, impulsivity, and disruptiveness. Body weight and premature retirement : population-based evidence from Finland

Background Health status is a principal determinant of labour market participation. In this study, we examined whether excess weight is associated with withdrawal from the labour market owing to premature retirement. Methods The analyses were based on nationally representative data from Finland over the period 2001–15 (N ∼ 2500). The longitudinal data included objective measures of body weight (i.e. body mass index and waist circumference) linked to register-based information on actual retirement age. Tämän pro gradu- työn tutkimuksen kohteena on kaksi viisivuorojärjestelmän kiertomallia. Näitä kahta kiertomallia kutsutaan lyhyeksi ja pitkäksi kierroksi. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuvata ja selvittää, miten itse työntekijät kokevat nämä kaksi erilaista kiertomallia. Lisäksi halutaan tarkastella, miten työntekijöiden näkemys kiertomalleista eroaa kiertomalleja tutkineiden näkemyksistä vai eroaako se. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu itsekerätystä aineistosta. Denne publiseringen viser hvordan elever bruker digitale teknologier og medier for å hente inntrykk, informasjon og kunnskap om ulike samfunnsforhold. Videre diskuteres hvordan elevenes bruk av ny teknologi påvirker deres engasjement og deltagelse i samfunnet. Diskusjonen bygger på en empirisk studie av samfunnsfagselever i den videregående skolen i Vest-Agder. Datamaterialet består av både observasjoner, intervjuer og serveymateriale. Det argumenteres for at selv om elevene har nødvendig teknisk kompetanse for å handtere informasjonssøk på internett, mangler de i stor grad den faglige og analytiske kompetansen. Folkehelseinstituttet (2016) konkluderer med at 15 til 20 prosent av alle norske ungdommer til enhver tid har nedsatt funksjon grunnet psykiske vansker. Samtidig viser Bakken (2016) til at ni prosent av guttene og 26 prosent av jentene fra 10. klassetrinn til Vg3 har høyt nivå av depressive symptomer. Det er i denne forbindelse verdt å merke seg at Raknes med flere (2017) finner at ungdom oftere har dårligere livskvalitet på skolen enn det de har hjemme.
