Modelling small angle neutron scattering data from polymers in supercritical fluids

2000

In this paper we report a SANS investigation of micelle formation by fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon block copolymers in supercritical CO2(scCO2) at 313K. A sharp unimer-micelle transition is obtained due to the tuning of the solvating ability of scCO2 by profiling pressure. At high pressure the copolymer is in a monomeric state with a random coil structure. By lowering the pressure aggregates are formed with the hydrocarbon segments forming the core and the fluorocarbon segments forming the corona of spherical aggregates. This aggregate-unimer transition is driven by the gradual penetration of CO2 molecules toward the core of the aggregate and is critically related to the density of the solvent, …

Fast determination of prominent carotenoids in tomato fruits by CEC using methacrylate ester-based monolithic columns.

2007

In this study, the major carotenoids (beta-carotene and lycopene) present in tomato fruits were analyzed by CEC with a methacrylate ester-based monolithic column. The effects of the porogenic solvent ratio, and the hydrophobicity of bulk monomer employed were examined on carotenoids separations. A fast separation of these analytes was achieved in less than 5.0 min in a mobile phase containing 35% THF, 30% ACN, 30% methanol, and 5% of a 5 mM Tris aqueous buffer, pH 8, with lauryl methacrylate-based monoliths. The CEC method was evaluated in terms of detection limit and reproducibility (retention time, area, and column preparation) with values below 1.6 microg/mL and 7.2%, respectively. The p…

Determination of alkylphenol ethoxylates by micellar electrokinetic chromatography with bile salts

2001

Octyl- and nonylphenol ethoxylates (OPEs and NPEs) with different numbers of ethoxy units (average values: n = 10 and N = 40 for OPEs, and n = 10 for NPEs) were separated by micellar electrokinetic chromatography under positive polarity using an 80 mM borate buffer of pH 8.5 containing sodium deoxycholate (SDC) or sodium cholate (SC). When sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was added to the background electrolyte (BGE) in the absence of the bile salt, a single peak at a migration time longer than that of the EOF was obtained. Substituting the SDS by a bile salt, the homologues were resolved. At the same bile salt concentration, resolution between the homologues was higher with SDC than using SC. …

Hypusinated eIF5A is required for the translation of collagen.

2021

ABSTRACT Translation of mRNAs that encode peptide sequences with consecutive prolines (polyproline) requires the conserved and essential elongation factor eIF5A to facilitate the formation of peptide bonds. It has been shown that, upon eIF5A depletion, yeast ribosomes stall in polyproline motifs, but also in tripeptide sequences that combine proline with glycine and charged amino acids. Mammalian collagens are enriched in putative eIF5A-dependent Pro-Gly-containing tripeptides. Here, we show that depletion of active eIF5A in mouse fibroblasts reduced collagen type I α1 chain (Col1a1) content, which concentrated around the nuclei. Moreover, it provoked the upregulation of endoplasmic reticul…

Micropolarity and Order in the Reverse Micelles of L62 and L64 Pluronic Copolymers, As Studied by Molecular Probe Techniques

1998

The reverse micelles of triblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) EO6PO36EO6 (Pluronic L62) and EO13PO30EO13 (Pluronic L64) in ternary (copolymer/o-xylene/water) and binary (copolymer/water) systems with different water contents were evidenced and investigated by fluorescence, absorption, and spin probe techniques. The spectral parameters of the polarity sensitive probes, 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (ANS), dansylhexadecylamine (Dansyl), pyrenesulfonic acid (PSA), 4-nitropyridine N-oxide (NP) and 4-(N,N‘-dimethyl-N-alkyl)ammonium 2,2‘,6,6‘-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl iodide (CAT n), were related to the local hydration and polari…

Maleic diamide polymerizable surfactants. Applications in emulsion polymerization

2003

Abstract A series of new polymerizable non-ionic and ionic surfactants (surfmers) with amides groups on both sides of the C=C double bonds have been prepared upon reaction of maleic isoimide carrying a long alkyl chain (or a benzyl group) with a hydrophilic amine derivative. Their critical micellar concentration (CMC) was measured with a surface tensiometer. They have been engaged in batch emulsion polymerization of styrene, and semi-batch seeded copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate, giving stable latexes during the polymerization process, and upon extraction with ethanol, showing a high rate of incorporation at the particle surface. However these surfmers do not confer good steri…

Sulfated and Non-Sulfated Glycopeptide Recognition Domains of P-Selectin Glycoprotein Ligand 1 and their Binding to P- and E-Selectin

2009

Total synthesis through block glycosylation and selective chemical O-sulfation of tyrosine residues yielded the glycopeptide recognition domain A (X=SO(3) (-)) of the P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1, in which the terminal sialic acid of the complex hexasaccharide side chain was replaced by (S)-cyclohexyl lactic acid. In binding assays the O-sulfated structure A showed high affinity towards P-selectin, the non-sulfated towards E-selectin.

Structural characterization of frozen n-heptane solutions of metal-containing reverse micelles

2007

The microstructure of temperature-quenched solutions of reverse micelles formed by sodium, cobalt, ytterbium, and cobalt/ytterbium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate in n-heptane has been investigated by SAXS and EXAFS. Some changes in the X-ray absorption spectra with respect to the same systems at room temperature have been observed. The analysis of the SAXS spectra leads to the hypothesis that at 77 K the closed spherical structure of reverse micelles is retained and that during the temperature quench they undergo a clustering process involving the transition from a quite random dispersion to the formation of more or less large clusters of strongly packed reverse micelles. This behavior is …

The influence of hydrophobic substitution on self-association of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) trib…

2007

Abstract A series of amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(n-alkyl glycidyl carbamate)s-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers were synthesized by reaction between poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polyglycidol-b-poly(ethylene oxide) precursor copolymer and four n-alkyl isocyanates: ethyl, propyl, butyl and pentyl. After dissolution in water at room temperature the copolymers spontaneously form micelles. The critical micellization concentrations were determined by UV–VIS spectroscopy. The dimensions of the micelles, the aggregation numbers, and in some cases the micellar shape were determined by dynamic and static light scattering in a relatively broad temperature range. Special attention has be…

1985

A block copolymer (6) with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions was synthesized, in order to examine its interaction with model membranes and its uptake by living cells. The copolymer comprised poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(L-lysine) with 50 mol-% substitution of the e-amino groups with palmitoyl groups. To permit 125I-labelling, p-methoxyphenyl residues (1–4 mol-%) were incorporated into the block copolymer and into a poly(ethylene oxide) used for comparison. Sudan Red 7 B solubilization studies indicated that the block copolymer, but not the homopolymer, forms micelles. Differential scanning calorimetry of dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine liposomes indicated that the block copolymer in…
