In search of the "Great Moment". The Interest in the 19th Century for the islamic Presence in Sicily: Some Notes.
2016
In the 19th century, orientalism and exoticism manifested themselves in Europe as tendencies supported by the invention of the myth of the Oriental and/or Muslim man as a decadent witness of a great past. The aforementioned lines by Enrico Onufrio seem representative of the cultural climate of that period. Nevertheless, we think that the passage can also be read as originating from an orientalist worldview or a similar worldview based on a “politics of alterity.”
Islamic Political Theology
2021
Can we affirm that a political theology exists in Islam? This apparently simple question is the core of Massimo Capanini and Marco Di Donato's edited collection of essays. Going back to the sources to preserve the Islamic history of Palestine. Jerusalem's archival heritage as a case study
2019
With regard to the presence of very important archives located in the heart of the most important city of Palestine (such as the maktaba al–masjid al–Aqsâ, the maktaba al–Budayriyya and the maktaba al– Uzbakiyya, to give an example), and in consideration of the recent events which have negatively involved both its social and cultural life, it seems to us that Jerusalem al–Quds can well represent an emblematic case study. To better highlight the necessity of going back to the sources in order to re–establish, and therefore to preserve, the Islamic history of Palestine, and to better define the significant role of Jerusalem’s archives, we consider it useful to precise both the historical and …

The Banū Abī’l-Ḥusayn or Kalbiti between Palermo and Cairo (x-xi sec.): Notes on a family and political interaction, rereading al-Maqrīzī · This article aims at investigating a crucial issue with regard to thehistory of Islamic Sicily, the Fatimid presence on the island during the 10th and the 11th century, as well as the integration of the largest island – and ṯaġr – in Muslim hands into the network of the Mediterranean relationships, particularly those between Sicily and Egypt, immediately after the Fatimid Caliph imām al-Mu‘izz li dīn Allāh (d. 975) moved to Cairo in 972. Since the subject of Fatimid Sicily has been scarcely explored, I have chosen to deal with the particular relationshi…
Continuità e discontinuità dell'islamismo libanese di fronte all'egemonia confessionale
2013
The demonstrations and revolts that have spread throughout the Arab world since 2010 have suddenly enlivened the political situation of an area that had long appeared to be under the heel of enduring dictatorships. It may be too soon to draw any conclusions about the so-called "Arab Spring", but one may attempt to grasp the potential that recent events may hold for the future. This is the goal of this book, in which renowned Italian and Arab scholars and experts in Muslim politics and history analyse the most interesting cases (Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Jordan, Tunisia, Lebanon), describe the variety of (democratic and not) outcomes, and emphasize the role of religion and religious parties. In…
