Spectroscopic study of polynucleotides in cationic W/O microemulsions
2007
Water has an active and key role in determining the structure of DNA. Entrapment of DNA and of synthetic model polynucleotides in reverse micelles, where the water activity can easily be modulated, may be a useful way of assessing the influence of water on DNA characteristics; it may also offer useful ideas on the problem of how the giant DNA molecule can be confined in the limited space of cell nuclei. The quaternary microemulsion CTAB n-hexane|n-pentanol| water was used to entrap calf thymus DNA, and the model polynucleotides single-strand polyA, single-strand polyT and duplex polyAT. Ultraviolet spectros-copy, specifically the band at 260 nm, was used to compare the pairing of complement…
Cathodic behaviour of dicationic imidazolium bromides: the role of the spacer
2019
The cathodic reduction of dicationic imidazolium bromides, whose spacer is either an aliphatic chain or a xylyl group, leads to the formation of the corresponding N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which were isolated as the corresponding thiones, after reaction with elemental sulfur. The behaviour of the dications was compared with the corresponding monocations. The behaviour of dicarbenes depends on the nature of the spacer. This study evidenced that dicarbenes deriving from xylyl dications are less stable than the corresponding aliphatic ones (giving lower yields in thiones), due to a debenzylation reaction. On the other hand, the yields in thiones starting from aliphatic dications are high…
SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE: UNUSUAL DEATH IN WESTERN COUNTRY. SUICIDE OR HOMICIDE?
2012
This case report describes a particular case of carbonized corpse, found in his burnt-out car in an isolated Palermo’s west suburban zone. The goal of this case report is to describe the shame and the social stigma related with suspicious of pedophilia and how it led a man to suicide by fire, considering that is an unusual way to die in western countries
Chloroform - źródło strachu czy narzędzie niebezpieczne i substancja narkotyczna
2013
This study attempts to assess the social and legal risks associated with the use of chloroform for purposes outside the medical industry and beyond. For this purpose, there have been complied the facts of the inhaled intoxicating substances from various fields of life and various kinds of criminal cases in this piece of work. It also includes some of the issues that pose problems to investigators and forensic specialists. The author also tries to draw attention to the rarely addressed questions of the role of the Internet and emerging on the Web cyberculture in the promotion and dissemination of data on chloroform thus creating visions incompatible with the notion of truth of usuage of the …
Fisica tecnica. Volume II. Termodinamica
2011
In this book some aspects of applied Thermodynamics are treated, starting from the basic notions of Physics, that are supposed to be known. This book was written as a textbook for engineering students, covering the topics of applied Thermodynamics which are most relevant to the following courses. However, the authors feel that it may also be of value for professionals as a reference or a freshen–up tool on the principles of the matter. All physical quantities are expressed in the units of the International System of Units (SI); this has made it possible to omit the units of measurement in all equations. Only few exceptions are made to this rule, where multiples or submultiples of SI units, …
I beni culturali e ambientali, Palermo
2012
