Control of a Non-isothermal CSTR by Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controllers

2009

The paper describes the application of a type-2 fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) characterized by the presence of saddle node and Hopf bifurcations. Its performance is compared with a type-1 fuzzy logic controller performance. A full analysis of the uncontrolled CSTR dynamic was carried out and used for the feedback-feedforward fuzzy controllers development. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness and the robustness of the type-2 FLCs which outperform their type-1 counterparts, particularly when uncertainties are present in the system.

New considerations for modelling a MED-TVC plant under dynamic conditions

2019

Abstract The multiple-effect distillation (MED) technology is nowadays the most promising desalination process to be coupled with variable heat sources, thus leading to a more sustainable way to produce water. In order to prove the potential of this, it is of major interest to develop powerful modelling tools to predict the performance of this coupling. Only a few models have been presented so far. They show promising results but were based on some simplifying assumptions and non-physical constraints that could limit the analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a MED plant. This paper presents new considerations for the dynamic modelling of a MED plant associated with a thermal vapour compressi…

Fluid-structure interaction and flow redistribution in membrane-bounded channels

2019

The hydrodynamics of electrodialysis and reverse electrodialysis is commonly studied by neglecting membrane deformation caused by transmembrane pressure (TMP). However, large frictional pressure drops and differences in fluid velocity or physical properties in adjacent channels may lead to significant TMP values. In previous works, we conducted one-way coupled structural-CFD simulations at the scale of one periodic unit of a profiled membrane/channel assembly and computed its deformation and frictional characteristics as functions of TMP. In this work, a novel fluid&ndash

A Thermochromic Liquid Crystals Image Analysis technique to investigate temperature polarization in spacer-filled channels for Membrane Distillation

2013

The analysis of flow fields and temperature distributions is of paramount importance in the development and optimization of new spacer-filled channel geometries for Membrane Distillation modules. The literature reports only few studies on the experimental characterization of such channels and, to the authors’ knowledge, none of them presents local information concerning the temperature distribution on the membrane surface. In the present work, a non-intrusive experimental technique named TLC-IA-TP is presented: it is based on the use of Thermochromic Liquid Crystals (TLCs) and digital Image Analysis (IA) and it is applied here for the first time to the analysis of Temperature Polarization (…

Modelling and cost analysis of hybrid systems for seawater desalination: Electromembrane pre-treatments for Reverse Osmosis

2019

Abstract The need to reduce energy consumption in seawater Reverse Osmosis (RO) process has pushed research towards the development of new hybrid systems in which, for example, other membrane processes can be used to pre-treat seawater. Electrodialysis (ED) and Reverse Electrodialysis (RED) can act as a pre-desalting step before seawater enters the RO unit, thus leading to an important energy saving in RO. In this work, two coupled models are proposed for the RED-RO and ED-RO systems. Each process model was validated. Then a sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the effect of the integration on the overall process cost saving. The analysis was performed by changing ED or RED voltage …

Digital Image Analysis Technique for mixing pattern measurements in bi-dispersed 2D gas fluidized beds

2011

This work concerns a new experimental technique based on Digital Image Analysis aimed at the measurement of the mixing behaviour of the granular phase in a 2D fluidized bed. In particular, the preliminary results obtained about the mixing pattern of a bi-disperse 2D gas fluidized bed are reported. Two different kind of particles were fluidized having the same density but different size. The technique is based on suitable colour-field decomposition of the fluidized bed, in which particles of different colours are employed. The technique here proposed can effectively measure the concentration field in the whole bed during operation, thus obtaining data that can be reliably used for CFD simula…

Seawater Desalination. Conventional and Renewable Energy Processes

2009

A growing proportion of the world’s population is dependent on Seawater Desalination as a source of fresh water for both potable and civil use. One of the main drawbacks of conventional desalination technologies is the substantial energy requirement, which is facing cost increases in the global energy market. “Seawater Desalination” presents an overview of conventional and non-conventional technologies, with a particular focus on the coupling of renewable energies with desalination processes. The first section of this book presents, in a technical but reader-friendly way, an overview of currently-used desalination processes, from thermal to membrane processes, highlighting the relevant tech…

Multi Stage Flash Desalination with Direct Mixing Condensation

2011

Multi Stage Flash desalination technology has been a leading technology in the desalination market for the last four decades. However as a result of the continuous increase of costs for the special materials required for the tube bundles the share of MSF technology in the market is nowadays steadily shrinking. Aim of the present work is to present a novel configuration for the MSF process. In the proposed arrangement evaporation occurs in a multi stage vertical column filled with packing material to enhance the achievement of flashing equilibrium in each stage, while condensation occurs in a second column through direct mixing with a colder water stream. Thermal integration for the recovery…
