Challenges in preparing for Environmental Technology Verification in a demonstration project: A case study of three innovative water treatment techno…
2022
The European Union's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program aims to foster innovative environmental technologies to reach the market and reassure potential users. This paper presents an investigation of using ETV for three technologies, being developed within the EU Zero Brine research and innovation project. The technologies were designed to recover high quality water, salts and minerals from brine solutions. The technologies in focus are the forward feed MED evaporator, the Multi Feed - Plug Flow Reactor Crystalliser and Eutectic Freeze Crystallization. The study sought to understand the challenges of the ETV process, the readiness and eligibility of technologies, and possibl…
Energia da gradienti salini: dall’acqua l’energia del futuro
2017
Today, continuous research efforts are aimed at finding alternative renewable energy sources to conventional ones and efficient technologies able to exploit them. Saline gradient energy is an unconventional renewable energy source widely available and currently under-exploited. In the present document the most technologies are illustrated avant-garde for the conversion of this energy into electric current: Pressure Retarded Osmosis, PRO (Osmosis Delayed by Pressure) and the Reverse Electrodialysis, RED (Inverse Electrodialysis).
Control of a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor by a feedback–feedforward structure using type-2 fuzzy logic controllers
2011
A control system that uses type-2 fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) is proposed for the control of a non-isothermal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), where a first order irreversible reaction occurs and that is characterized by the presence of bifurcations. Bifurcations due to parameter variations can bring the reactor to instability or create new working conditions which although stable are unacceptable. An extensive analysis of the uncontrolled CSTR dynamics was carried out and used for the choice of the control configuration and the development of controllers. In addition to a feedback controller, the introduction of a feedforward control loop was required to maintain effective control…
Effect of membrane profiles on the limiting current density in electrodialysis
2019
In the present work, we experimenrtally investigated the effect of different membrane profiles on the LCD, testing also different operating conditions.
Effective magnesium recovery via seawater brines mining
In the last couple of decades, a rising interest has been focused on the research of novel and unconventional sources for mining minerals, such as industrial waste brines. As an example, brines are produced by desalination plants and discharged directly, or after being treated, into receiving water bodies possibly causing environmental concerns and renouncing the possibility to recover minerals [1,2]. Within this framework, the Water Mining WU-H2020 project aims at implementing an advanced Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) demo systems for the extraction of minerals and valuables products from industrial waste brines through a circular approach. The ZLD demo plant consists of: (i) Nano Filtration…
A novel colorimetric experimental technique for the characterisation of metal hydroxides reactive crystallization phenomena
2021
The reactive crystallization of metal hydroxides constitutes a field of raising interest driven by the importance of metals recovery and the wide industrial applications of their hydroxides. A popular example is related to the case of magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), which is widely employed in the fields of water treatment, desulphurization of fuel gases, pharmaceutical industry, refractory field and flame retardants

SELECTIVE CRYSTALLISATION OF MAGNESIUM AND CALCIUM HYDROXIDES FROM INDUSTRIAL WASTE BRINES: A PILOT STUDY
2021
In the last years, a rising interest has been focused on the valorization of waste brines from industrial processes, such as desalination plants. In most current scenarios, waste brines are disposed directly, or after being treated, into a receiving water bodies, often causing environmental concerns and, more importantly, renouncing to the possibility of using such a waste as source of valuable raw materials. In fact, these brines are typically rich in useful salts and minerals, whose recovery can increase the environmental and economical sustainability of the industrial process [1-2]. The ZERO BRINE EU-H2020 project aims at the development of technologies for the recovery of salts, mineral…
