Spectrophotometric evidence for the solubilization site of betalain pigments in membrane biomimetic systems.
2007
The solubilization site of two betalain pigments, namely, betanin and indicaxantin, into l-alpha-dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles was investigated by a spectrophotometric study. Pigment absorbance was monitored by varying phospholipid concentration, at a constant temperature that was varied in a range including the main phase transition temperature (Tm) of the relevant phospholipid bilayer. Maximum betanin absorption increased with the increase of DPPC concentration within the entire temperature range, reaching a plateau. The binding constant (Kb) of the pigment, calculated according to a pseudo-two-phase model, varied with the temper…
Vieraalla maalla : kuolansuomalaisten elinkaari Päiväjärven / Tuuloman kylän kautta tarkasteltuna
2017
Tutkimukseni kohteena on kuolansuomalaisen uudisasutuksen kehittyminen ja suomalaisyhteisöjen elinkaari Kuolan niemimaalla 1800-luvun puolivälistä 1940-luvun alkuun. Keskiössä on Päiväjärven eli Tuuloman kylä Murmanskin eteläpuolella Tuulomajoen varressa. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu tekemästäni entisen Päiväjärven asukkaan, Helena Lokan haastattelusta sekä Murmanskin aluearkiston arkistomateriaalilähteistä, joihin kuuluvat mm. Päiväjärven ja viereisen Jyrkinän kylän kyläneuvostojen pöytäkirjat 1930-luvulta. Lisäksi työssä on käytetty kirjallisia lähteitä, joista mm. kuolansuomalaisen taiteilijan ja kirjailijan Sven Lokan omaelämäkerralliset teokset kuuluvat muistelukerronnan piiriin. Tutkimuks…

The shadow economy in Portugal: An analysis with the MIMIC approach
2007
The paper estimates the Portuguese Shadow Economy (SE) from 1977 to 2004 and tests the statistical relationships between the SE and other economic variables. In order to carry out the econometric analysis, a multiple indicators multiple causes (MIMIC) model with means and intercepts is applied. The main causes of the Portuguese SE are analyzed and economic policies to reduce it are suggested. An appraisal on the reliability of estimates and an alternative benchmark strategy for the MIMIC approach are proposed.
MIME: A Mixed-Space Collaborative System with Three Immersion Levels and Multiple Users
2018
Shared spaces for remote collaboration are nowadays possible by considering a variety of users, devices, immersion systems, interaction capabilities, navigation paradigms, etc. There is a substantial amount of research done in this line, proposing different solutions. However, still a more general solution that considers the heterogeneity of the involved actors/items is lacking. In this paper, we present MIME, a mixed-space tri-collaborative system. Differently from other mixed-space systems, MIME considers three different types of users (in different locations) according to the level of immersion in the system, who can interact simultaneously – what we call a tri-collaboration. For the thr…
Low-complexity AoA and AoD estimation in the transformed spatial domain for millimeter wave MIMO channels
2021
2014
The information and communications technologies (ICT) are increasingly used in society and business. ICT have become a key element for business development and the improvement of activities in all departments. Analogously, the rise of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), and the use of remote devices and functions such as e-maintenance, have opened great possibilities for maintenance optimization. Those techniques have resulted in the emergence of technological challenges such as interoperability between different systems in order to exchange and coordinate information. In this context, the application of business process modelling is a cruc…
The signal detection problem of aposematic prey revisited: integrating prior social and personal experience
2020
Ever since Alfred R. Wallace suggested brightly coloured, toxic insects warn predators about their unprofitability, evolutionary biologists have searched for an explanation of how these aposematic prey evolve and are maintained in natural populations. Understanding how predators learn about this widespread prey defence is fundamental to addressing the problem, yet individuals differ in their foraging decisions and the predominant application of associative learning theory largely ignores predators' foraging context. Here we revisit the suggestion made 15 years ago that signal detection theory provides a useful framework to model predator learning by emphasizing the integration of prior inf…
Phencyclidine-induced disruption of oscillatory activity in prefrontal cortex: Effects of antipsychotic drugs and receptor ligands
2016
The non-competitive NMDA receptor (NMDA-R) antagonist phencyclidine (PCP) markedly disrupts thalamocortical activity, increasing excitatory neuron discharge and reducing low frequency oscillations (LFO, <4Hz) that temporarily group neuronal discharge. These actions are mainly driven by PCP interaction with NMDA-R in GABAergic neurons of the thalamic reticular nucleus and likely underlie PCP psychotomimetic activity. Here we report that classical (haloperidol, chlorpromazine, perphenazine) and atypical (clozapine, olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, ziprasidone, aripripazole) antipsychotic drugs - but not the antidepressant citalopram - countered PCP-evoked fall of LFO in the medial prefron…
Amelioration of the abnormal phenotype of a new L1 syndrome mouse mutation with L1 mimetics
2021
L1 syndrome is a rare developmental disorder characterized by hydrocephalus of varying severity, intellectual deficits, spasticity of the legs, and adducted thumbs. Therapy is limited to symptomatic relief. Numerous gene mutations in the L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM, hereafter abbreviated L1) were identified in L1 syndrome patients, and those affecting the extracellular domain of this transmembrane type 1 glycoprotein show the most severe phenotypes. Previously analyzed rodent models of the L1 syndrome focused on L1-deficient animals or mouse mutants with abrogated cell surface expression of L1, making it difficult to test L1 function-triggering mimetic compounds with potential therapeu…
