Myrkylliset tai pahanmakuiset lajit voivat puolustautua saalistajia vastaan mainostamalla syömäkelvottomuuttaan näkyvin varoitussignaalein kuten värein. Topological polarization, dual invariants, and surface flat band in crystalline insulators

We describe a three-dimensional crystalline topological insulator (TI) phase of matter that exhibits spontaneous polarization. This polarization results from the presence of (approximately) flat bands on the surface of such TIs. These flat bands are a consequence of the bulk-boundary correspondence of polarized topological media, and contrary to related nodal line semimetal phases also containing surface flat bands, they span the entire surface Brillouin zone. We also present an example Hamiltonian exhibiting a Lifshitz transition from the nodal line phase to the TI phase with polarization. Cognitive Mimetics and Human Digital Twins : Towards Holistic AI Design

AI is replacing and supporting people in many intelligence-requiring tasks. Therefore, it is essential to consider the conceptual grounds of designing future technical artefacts and technologies for practical use. We are developing two new practical design tools: cognitive mimetics and human digital twins for AI designers. Cognitive mimetics analyses human information processing to be mimicked by intelligent technologies. Human digital twins provide a tool for modelling what people do based on the results of cognitive mimetics. Abstract The new concepts of the ‘covariance matrix normalization’ and the ‘cascade’ structure of the adaptive least-squares estimator are shown to generalize and extend the use of internal information feedback in various robustness/alertness-oriented modifications to the standard ALS estimation algorithm. Tämä pro gradu-tutkielma on vuonna 2008 YAMK-päättötyöstä alkaneen kumiobjektien säilytystilan kehittämistyön väliraportti. Se on katsaus kehityssuunnitelman toteutumiseen. Kumiobjektien säilytys on osa työtäni konservaattorina, joten tutkielma on työelämälähtöinen. Museologiassa se kuuluu museografian osa-alueeseen, kuten Peter van Mensch on sen määritellyt. Kumimateriaali on jo lähtökohdiltaan epävakaa materiaali. Kumimateriaaleista valmistetuilla objekteilla on muita objekteja lyhyempi elinkaari ja objektin tulessa museoon kumimateriaalin hajoamisprosessit ovat jo nopeutuneet. The impact of a short auditory training on L2 pronunciation in languages with different orthographic depth

It is sometimes assumed that the pronunciation of an L2 is more predictable and thus easier to learn if its orthography is transparent. This study aims to find out whether this assumption holds true in the first stages of L2 learning in languages with different orthographic depth. The study also examines the effect that a short auditory training (supported by simultaneous orthographic input) has on L2 pronunciation. A central finding was that the pronunciation of an L2 with a transparent orthography was not easier to learn for a naïve learner when compared to an L2 with an opaque orthography. Momentum-space structure of surface states in a topological semimetal with a nexus point of Dirac lines

Three-dimensional topological semimetals come in different variants, either containing Weyl points or Dirac lines. Here we describe a more complicated momentum-space topological defect where several separate Dirac lines connect with each other, forming a momentum-space equivalent of the real-space nexus considered before for helium-3. Close to the nexus the Dirac lines exhibit a transition from type I to type II lines. We consider a general model of stacked honeycomb lattices with the symmetry of Bernal (AB) stacked graphite and show that the structural mirror symmetries in such systems protect the presence of the Dirac lines, and also naturally lead to the formation of the nexus.
