Advances in Research for Biomimetic Materials

2018

Smart surfaces and materials can play a significant role in intelligent, adaptive and responsive envelopes because of these intrinsic properties. The environmental question and energy efficiency in which the construction sector is involved, is in a process that can not be interrupted and that puts researchers and designers in front of a scientific and design challenge in which it is necessary to contribute to find different ways of study and experimentation on new materials and constructive languages, ranging from the application, to the structural, design and molecular, to mention the main ones. The development of technologies is helping architects of the “biomimetic current” to recreate c…

Engineering Topological Nodal Line Semimetals in Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupled Atomic Chains

2019

We study an atomic chain in the presence of modulated charge potential and modulated Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) of equal period. We show that for commensurate periodicities $\lambda=4 n$ with integer $n$, the three-dimensional synthetic space obtained by sliding the two phases of the charge potential and RSOC features a topological nodal line semimetal protected by an antiunitary particle-hole symmetry. The location and shape of the nodal lines strongly depend on the relative amplitude between the charge potential and RSOC.

Self-cleaning antimicrobial surfaces by bio-enabled growth of SnO2 coatings on glass.

2013

Conventional vapor-deposition techniques for coatings require sophisticated equipment and/or high-temperature resistant substrates. Therefore bio-inspired techniques for the fabrication of inorganic coatings have been developed in recent years. Inspired by the biology behind the formation of the intricate skeletons of diatoms orchestrated by a class of cationic polyamines (silaffins) we have used surface-bound spermine, a naturally occurring polyamine, to promote the fast deposition of homogeneous, thin and transparent biomimetic SnO2 coatings on glass surfaces. The bio-enabled SnO2 film is highly photoactive, i.e. it generates superoxide radicals (O2˙(-)) upon sunlight exposure resulting i…

Twisting and buckling: A new undulation mechanism for artificial swimmers

2012

Among the various locomotion strategies of the animal kingdom, the undulation locomotion is of particular interest for biomimetic applications. In this paper, we present an artificial swimmer set into motion by a new and non-trivial undulation mechanism, based on the twisting and buckling of its body. The swimmer consists of a long cylinder of ferrogel which is polarized transversely and in opposite directions at each extremity. When it is placed on a water film and submitted to a transverse oscillating magnetic field, the worm-like swimmer undulates and swims. Whereas symmetry breaking is due to the field gradient, the undulations of the worm result from a torsional buckling instability as…

Eight-Membered Rings With Two Heteroatoms 1,5

2022

This chapter titled “Eight-membered Rings with two Heteroatoms 1,5” deals eight-membered rings with two heteroatoms in a 1,5-relationship, namely 1,5-diazocine, 1,5-oxazocine, 1,5-thiazocine, 1,5-dioxocin, 1,5-oxathiocin, and 1,5-dithiocin and covers the literature from 2007 to October 2020 (SciFindern search) reporting the chemistry of uncondensed derivatives, diheterocines fused to carbocycles and heterocycles, as well as bridged diheterocines. Among them, the 1,5-diazocine ring system is by far the largest class, based on the number of publications which constituted the 87% of the total amount of the references reported in the range of interest of CHEC IV. Thus, 1,5-diazocines were divid…

Template-Assembled Synthetic G-Quartets (TASQ) hydrosolubles : du ligand de quadruplexes d'ADN et d'ARN à la plateforme catalytique

2013

Natural G-quartets, a cyclic and coplanar array of four guanine residues held together via Hoogsteen H-bond network, have recently received much attention due to their involvement in G-quadruplex-DNA, an alternative higher-order DNA structure strongly suspected to play important roles in key cellular events (chromosomal stability, regulation of gene expression). Besides this, synthetic G-quartets, which artificially mimic native G-quartets, have also been widely studied for their involvement in nanotechnological applications (i.e. nanowires, artificial ion channels, etc.). In contrast, intramolecular synthetic G-quartets, also named template-assembled synthetic G-quartet (TASQ), have been m…

Tetraalkylammonium Cations Conduction through a Single Nanofluidic Diode: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

2017

[EN] We describe experimentally and theoretically the concentration-dependent conduction of tetraalkylammonium (TAA+) cations through a nanofluidic diode fabricated in a polymer membrane via asymmetric track-etching techniques. This single-pore membrane exhibits current rectification characteristics because of the ionized carboxylate groups on the pore surface. We use aqueous solutions of potassium (K+ ), ammonium (A+ ), tetramethylammonium (TMA+ ), tetraethylammonium (TEA+ ), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA+ ) ions with concentrations ranging from 50 to 500 mM under acidic (pH 3.5) and physiological (pH 6.5) conditions. Compared with the K+ and A+ ions, the TMA+ , TEA+ , and TBA+ ions show rel…

Sylvia Plath kuoleman käsikirjoittajana

2015

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan itsemurhan ja lapsenmurhan kysymyksiä amerikkalaisen kirjailijan Sylvia Plathin (1932−1963) tuotannossa sekä kirjailijan elämään kohdistuvissa representaatioissa. Analysoin Plathille omistetun nettifoorumin Sylvia Plath Forum kirjoituksia sekä erityisesti runon ”Edge” tulkintoja Plath-tutkimuksessa. Teoreettisena lähtökohtana toimii René Girardin mimeettisen halun teoria. Plathin elämäntarinan kohdalla mimeettisen halun tematiikan tekee relevantiksi kolmiodraama, joka rakentui Plathin, hänen aviopuolisonsa kirjailija Ted Hughesin ja tämän rakastajattaren Assia Wevillin välille. Hughes toimi kolmiodraaman kärkenä, naisten jaetun halun kohteena, mutta eräissä elämäk…

Controlled Crystallization of CaCO3on Hyperbranched Polyglycerol Adsorbed to Self-Assembled Monolayers

2005

The formation of biominerals by living organisms is governed by the cooperation of soluble and insoluble macromolecules with peculiar interfacial properties. To date, most of the studies on mineralization processes involve model systems that only account for the existence of one organic matrix and thus disregard the interaction between the soluble and insoluble organic components that is crucial for a better understanding of the processes taking place at the inorganic-organic interface. We have set up a model system composed of a matrix surface, namely, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), and a soluble component, hyperbranched polyglycerol. The model mineral calcium carbonate displays diverse…
