Oradour-sur-Glane and the Memorial Museum: A Site of Reconciliation

2013

When a community has a suffering memory, within the memory-oblivion mechanisms characterizing every form of social stability, the interventions of musealization of a specific landscape can usefully contribute to the “trauma elaboration” process, being the only helpful expedients to turn the painful events that the community is not able to cope with into a “shared commemoration”. However, based on the experience from the Charles de Gaulle Memorial in Colombey, the museal interpretation can determine a touristic earning power which can often overwhelm the more expected “duty of memory”. Every new museal insertion, being a place fit for the building of the community mind, has in fact to fulfil…

A global workspace theory model for trust estimation in human-robot interaction

2019

Successful and genuine social connections between humans are based on trust, even more when the people involved have to collaborate to reach a shared goal. With the advent of new findings and technologies in the field of robotics, it appears that this same key factor that regulates relationships between humans also applies with the same importance to human-robot interactions (HRI). Previous studies have proven the usefulness of a robot able to estimate the trustworthiness of its human collaborators and in this position paper we discuss a method to extend an existing state-of-the-art trust model with considerations based on social cues such as emotions. The proposed model follows the Global …

Direzione normativa e teoria della mente

2015

Normative guidance is a way of influencing others’ behaviour which operates through the mind (through mental states and processes such as norm understanding, normative reasoning, belief in norm’s validity, choice to follow it, etc.). Knowledge of the relevant aspects of the mind has therefore a clear importance in order to improve normative guidance (increase its efficacy, rationalize it, moralize it, etc.). But the study of the relationship between mind and normativity is a too wide field, impossible to explore in its entirety: selection criteria are needed. In this article I propose some contributions to their elaboration. First, I point out the “phenomenon of normativity” (meant as the c…

Tucidide e il marchese de Norpois. Memoria, obbligazione politica e ingratitudine

2023

This paper proposes some reflections on the problem of political ingratitude in international relations, particularly in the context of an imminent or already ongoing war. Recalling past benefits brings memory into play and emphasises the expectation produced by these benefits and the importance attached to the political obligations that should result from them. After providing some insights from Homer, attention will focus on Thucydides. Among the numerous case studies offered by the Athenian historian, particular attention will be paid to the conflict between Corcyra and Corinth in Book I and the political use of memory and gratitude in the speeches delivered in Athens by the ambassadors …

A non-reductionist Physiologism. Nietzsche on Body, Mind and Cosciousness

2013

This paper addresses the following questions from the point of view of Nietzsche’s philosophy: What is the mind, and which kind of relationship does it hold to the body? Accordingly, the aim of this paper is to show that Nietzsche’s philosophy suggested a view of the mind that allows to outline an alternative stance to both mentalism and physicalism, as well as to both dualism and reductionism. It is argued that Nietzsche’s rehabilitation of the body as the specific seat of the mind in opposition to the Cartesian supremacy of the Ego still is of a great interest for contemporary philosophy, since it is not equivalent either to a reversed form of Cartesian dualism or to a physicalist reducti…

Representation

2020

Representation is a primitive notion of many philosophical theories and of cognitive science. It is assumed as an intuitively understandable label assigned to the functions by which a biological or an artificial agent takes part in the world in an epistemological or a behavioral manner. It is employed to define the conditions for the semantic individuation of the states of the agent. The notion of representation was introduced systematically in the Scholastics’ view of cognition. In modern philosophy, the term is often used as a verb. Representation becomes the function of a class of mental states. In contemporary philosophy, the debate over the semantic individuation of states is intertwin…

Robotics Construction Kits: From “Objects to Think with” to “Objects to Think and to Emote with”

2018

This paper discusses new ideas about the use of educational robotics in social-emotional learning. In particular, educational robotics could be a tool intended to allow children to acquire some of the basic aspects of human emotions and emotional functioning, and to understand how these relate to the mind and body. More specifically, by using robots such as the LEGO Mindstorm construction kits—which allow users to both construct the body of the robot and to provide it with a behavioural repertory—children have the opportunity to visualize (and manipulate) the relationship between the robot’s body and mind. This allows them to simulate “embodied emotional minds” and to reflect on new neurosc…

The hidden side of the Ultimatum Game: The role of motivations and mind-reading in a two-level one-shot Ultimatum Game

2015

The main aim of our study is to investigate the role of motivations and mind-reading in a two-level one-shot Ultimatum Game with three players. Our intention is to analyse subjects’ behaviour in both the responder and proposer roles. In the responder role, we found that the difference between the subjects’ expectations and the actual offers was the major factor that influenced their decisions and motivations in receiving money. In the proposer role, our results showed a significant influence of mind-reading, with a positive association between the fairness of subjects’ offers and the subjects’ expectations about the recipients’ willingness to accept. Although a shared concept of fairness ex…
