Influence of water, temperature and sucrose on dynamics in glassy starch-based products studied by low field 1H NMR

Abstract In this study, the influence of both water content and temperature on the mobility of glassy starch-based matrices (starch alone or mixed with sucrose at the ratio 0% to 20% db) were studied using time domain 1 H NMR. The 2nd moment M 2 , and transversal relaxation time T 2 ∗ were used to study the molecular mobility of the rigid and mobile fraction of the NMR signal, respectively. The molecular mobility of the protons constituting the samples increased with water content (up to 13% wb) at all temperatures. Inverse response of polypropylene to gamma radiation under vacuum

Abstract The effect of gamma radiation under vacuum on polypropylene is analysed on the basis of a simple kinetic model. The influence of the irradiation parameters, total absorbed dose and dose rate, on the rates of the main reactions occurring during irradiation, i.e. β-scission, addition to double bonds and termination, is studied. Using kinetic equations, and free radical and double bond balance relationships, we show that it is possible to rationalize the response of polypropylene to gamma radiation. Silica-based macrocellular foam monoliths with hierarchical trimodal pore systems

Abstract Silica-based large monoliths exhibiting a trimodal hierarchical pore system have been successfully prepared through a nanotectonic approach starting from sub-micro/nanometric mesoporous particles (as building blocks), and using a polyurethane foam as macrotemplate. Large trimodal pieces with macrocellular like interconnected macropores in the micrometer range are a mineralized replica of the polyurethane foam. Textural large-mesopores/macropores (in the 20–70 nm range) have their origin in the inter-particle voids. The small intra-particle mesopore system (with pore diameters around 2–3 nm) is due to the supramolecular templating effect of the surfactant.

Validity of NMR pore-size analysis of cultutal heritage ancient building materials containing magnetic impurities

NMR relaxation time distributions, obtained with laboratory and portable devices, are utilized to characterize the pore-size distributions of building materials coming from the Roman remains of the Greek-Roman Theatre of Taormina. To validate the interpretation of relaxation data in terms of pore-size distribution, comparison of results from standard and in situ NMR experiments with results of the mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) has been made. Monetization of tight gas reservoirs, which contain significant gas reserves world-wide, represents a challenge for the entire oil and gas industry. Tuning the pore size from micro- to meso-porous in thermally stable aluminophosphates

Characterization of mortars from ancient and traditional water supply systems in Sicily

Long aged mortars from ancient hydraulic constructions of Sicily, i.e. the Roman aqueduct of Thermae and the Punic cisterns and traditional water supply systems in Pantelleria, have been characterised by means of XRD analysis, optical microscopy and simultaneous thermal analysis to correlate the hydraulic properties to the texture and to their different role in the construction, i.e. lining, covering, roofing and joint mortars. According to a procedure proposed in the literature all of the samples, but two air hardening ones, show high hydraulicity, which somehow can be related to the characteristics of aggregates.

Pore structure and water transfer in Pietra d’Aspra limestone: A neutronographic study

Neutron radiography (NR) was here applied to study the effects of two different commercially available consolidants on the water absorption properties in a particular type of limestone (biocalcarenite), known as Pietra d’Aspra stone, which is one of the most extensively used lithotypes in Sicilian Baroque buildings. Our attention was mainly focused on the evaluation, using a fast and nondestructive visualization of water motion through capillarity, of the effectiveness of such layers as consolidating agents in view of preserving and maintaining both old and modern structures. Structural overprint of a late Paleozoic accretionary system in north-central Chile (34°-35°S) during post-accretional deformation

En la Cordillera de la Costa de Chile, de 36° a 35°S, se encuentra expuesta la arquitectura coherentemente preservada de un prisma de acrecion del Paleozoico tardio, en cercana vecindad a un area entre los 34° y 35°S, donde el mismo esta fuertemente modificado por procesos postacrecionales. Posidonia oceanica as a Historical Monitor Device of Lead Concentration in Marine Environment

We show that Posidonia oceanica is able to reliably monitor the variability of environmental lead (Pb). We analyze lead concentration measured in the scales and rhizomes of Posidonia oceanica collected in seven sites along the coasts of the Sicily island and subsequently fractioned them according to a lepidochronological analysis. We measure lead concentration in Posidonia oceanica tissues by using the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry technique. We compare the measured lead concentration with the estimated lead emission in air due to the gasoline sold and used for combustion in car engines in Sicily.
