Photoluminescence study of radiative transitions in ZnTe bulk crystals

1998

Abstract This paper focuses on photoluminescence (PL) and selective photoluminescence (SPL) of ZnTe bulk crystals grown by the cold traveling heater method. The crystals exhibit a PL response with a much more intense excitonic zone than the one due to free-to-bound and donor–acceptor bands, denoting a good sample quality. In particular, we have investigated the Y 1 and Y 2 peaks which, in epitaxial layers, have usually been associated with structural defects. On bulk samples they have not been detected so far because of different masked mechanisms. SPL measurements show that the electrons are the most likely involved carriers for this emission. Additionally, the analysis of the PL variation…

Intermediate Range Order in Silicate Melts and Glasses: Computer Simulation Studies

2002

ABSTRACTWe present the results of large scale computer simulations to discuss the structural and dynamic properties of silicate melts with the compositions (Na2O)(2·SiO2), (Na2O)(20·SiO2) and (Al2O3)(2·SiO2). We show that these systems exhibit additional intermediate range order as compared to silica (SiO2) where the characteristic intermediate length scales stem from the tetrahedral network structure. Furthermore we show that the sodium dynamics in the sodium silicate systems exhibits a very peculiar feature: the long–time decay of the incoherent intermediate scattering function can be described by a Kohlrausch law with a constant exponent β for q > qth whereby qth is smaller than the l…

Sub 500 nm refractory carbonaceous particles in the polar stratosphere

2017

Abstract. Eleven particle samples collected in the polar stratosphere during SOLVE (SAGE III Ozone loss and validation experiment) from January until March 2000 were characterized in detail by high-resolution transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. A total number of 4175 particles (TEM = 3845; SEM = 330) was analyzed from these samples which were collected mostly inside the polar vortex in the altitude range between 17.3 and 19.9 km. By particle volume, all samples are dominated by volatile particles (ammonium sulfates/hydrogen sulfates). By number, approximately 28–82 % of the particles are refractory carbonaceous with si…

Conformations of Star-Branched Polyelectrolytes

1996

Scaling theory describing the conformations of weakly charged star-branched polyelectrolytes in dilute and semi-dilute salt-free solutions is developed. The dependence of the star size on the number of branches as well as on the solution concentration is analyzed. It is shown that the star size increases with an increase in the number of branches, f, at small f and tends to a constant value at large f. An increase in the concentration of stars in a solution results in a decrease in the star size R according to the power low : R ∼ c -1/3 in the range of a moderate concentration and R ∼ c -1/4 at larger concentration. For stars with a small number of branches the behavior R ∼ c -1/2 in a cert…

Dielectric properties of lithium niobate single crystals doped with gadolinium

2013

In this paper dielectric properties of LiNbO3:Gd single crystals at temperatures ~ 290–490 K at narrow frequency range (0.5–106 Hz) are presented. The influence of growth conditions was also investigated. The anomalies on dielectric plots depend on the development of the micro- and nano-domain structure.

Abstract. This paper presents results from the "INUIT-JFJ/CLACE 2013" field campaign at the high alpine research station Jungfraujoch in January/February 2013. The chemical composition of ice particle residuals (IPR) in a size diameter range of 200–900 nm was measured in orographic, convective and non-convective clouds with a single particle mass spectrometer (ALABAMA) under ambient conditions characterized by temperatures between −28 and −4 °C and wind speed from 0.1 to 21 km h−1. Additionally, background aerosol particles in cloud free air were investigated. The IPR were sampled from mixed-phase clouds with two inlets which selectively extract small ice crystals in-cloud, namely the Count…

Discrimination between effects induced by microbial activity and water-rock interactions under hydrothermal conditions according to REE behaviour

2013

AbstractRare earth elements (REE) were investigated in siliceous stromatolites forming in the Specchio di Venere Lake on Pantelleria Island. Chondrite-normalised patterns show significant La enrichments and Eu depletions suggesting that fluids involved in stromatolite growth experienced strong rock-water interactions under hydrothermal conditions. At the same time, enrichments in heavy REE (HREE) with respect to intermediate REE (MREE) suggest that hydrothermal fluids interacted with microbial mats during deposition of the stromatolites. The above-mentioned features suggest that rock-water interactions and bacterial activity were simultaneously recorded in the REE patterns of stromatolites,…

Microanalytical methods for in-situ high-resolution analysis of rock varnish at the micrometer to nanometer scale

2015

Abstract A wide range of analytical techniques were used to investigate rock varnish from different locations (Negev, Israel; Knersvlakte, South Africa; Death Valley and Mojave Desert, California): a 200 nm-femtosecond laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS), an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), focused ion beam (FIB) slicing, and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy–near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM–NEXAFS). This combination enables comprehensive high-spatial-resolution analysis of rock varnish. Femtosecond LA-ICP-MS and EPMA were used for quantitative determination of element concentrations. In-situ measurements were conducte…

The behaviour of REEs in Thailand's Mae Klong estuary: Suggestions from the Y/Ho ratios and lanthanide tetrad effects

2007

Abstract The concentrations of Rare Earth Elements and yttrium (REY) were measured in dissolved phase, in suspended particulate matter (SPM) and in sediments in seven sampling stations in the Mae Klong estuarine system (Inner Thailand Gulf) in order to study their behaviour and distribution pattern. The analysed samples generally show high Rare Earth Element (REE) content in the dissolved phase, with high Medium Rare Earth Elements (MREEs) and Y enrichments in the shale-normalized pattern (versus PAAS). These chemical features are interpreted in terms of direct influences of weathering processes of REE-rich minerals (e.g., phosphates), which abundantly out-crop in the Mae Klong watershed. T…
