An environmental study by factor analysis of surface seawaters in the Gulf of Valencia (Western Mediterranean)

Abstract A study is made on the quality of coastal waters in the Gulf of Valencia (Spain) in terms of contamination markers including microbiological agents, toxic heavy metals and nutrients that adversely affect the environment. Relationships are also established between these factors and other physical and chemical parameters. Effects of tributyltin(IV) chloride on fertilization ofStyela plicata(Ascidiacea: Tunicata): II. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies

The morphological aspects of Styela plicata fertilization after treatment with tributyltin(IV) chloride are described by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy investigations. Alterations have been shown both on female and male gametes; spermatozoa, all the egg envelopes and the mitochondria of the egg cortical cytoplasm are modified in relation to incubation time. As a consequence, the damage to gametes blocks sperm–egg interaction and fertilization does not occur. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Thermal Degradation of Green Asparagus Texture

A cutting cell was developed to evaluate the texture of green asparagus by measuring its resistance to being cut with a wire. The cell was used in conjunction with a universal texturometer and improved on the single-point method of the Wilder fibrometer. Experimental conditions were determined for using the cell to measure the cutting resistance of asparagus subjected to different extents of heat treatment. Better discrimination between samples was obtained than with a Kramer cell. Authentication of the protected designation of origin horchata de Valencia through the chemometric treatment of mineral content

Spanish horchata de chufa samples were authenticated based on the determination of mineral elements by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) combined with different chemometric methods. The ability of multivariate analysis, such as principle components analysis (PCA), classification and regression trees (CARTs) and discriminant analysis (DA) were evaluated in order to achieve a correct sample classification. The geochemistry of Tl and its isotopes during magmatic and hydrothermal processes: The peralkaline Ilimaussaq complex, southwest Greenland

Abstract We use thallium (Tl) concentrations, K/Rb, K/Tl and Rb/Tl ratios and Tl isotopes in minerals from the alkaline to peralkaline Ilimaussaq complex (South Greenland) to trace magmatic differentiation, crustal assimilation, magmatic degassing, ore precipitation and hydrothermal metasomatism. Closed-system magmatic differentiation is marked by a coherent decrease of K/Tl- and K/Rb-ratios, whereas crustal assimilation results in a strong Tl-enrichment, causing low K/Tl-ratios compared to K/Rb-ratios. Radial cracks around α-quartz inclusions in almandine: Constraints on the metamorphic history of the Oman mountains

Radiating tensional cracks around α-quartz inclusions in almandine have been observed in metapelite samples from the southeastern Saih Hatat tectonic window, northeastern Oman Mountains. These almandines show an inclusion-rich (glaucophane + epidote) and strongly deformed core with inclusions of different mineral phases. The rim of the same almandines is inclusion-poor and shows only quartz, apatite, zircon, rutile and BaAl phosphates as inclusions. Quartz and apatite inclusions in the rim are single crystals often surrounded by radial cracks. Identification of metalloporphyrins extracted from the copper bearing black shale of fore sudetic monocline (Poland)

Abstract Metalloporphyrins were isolated from copper-bearing black shale ores. The shale originates from the Lubin copper mine (Poland). The porphyrins have been extracted by way of a Soxhlet apparatus, and then purified using column chromatography. In order to identify the extracted porphyrins complexes UV–Vis, mass spectrometry and EPR analytical techniques have been used.

Sedimentological and diagenetic influences on low permeability properties of the Middle Jurassic limestones (Paris Basin, France)

A detailed sedimentological, geochemical and mineralogical study is carried out on the Early Bajocian to Early Callovian (Middle Jurassic) limestones of the Paris Basin. Deposits include 18 lithofacies which are stacked into 10 third-order depositional sequences. Our geochemical study including a compilation of bibliographic data allows us to refine the existing sea surface palaeotemperature pattern. A cooling from the latest Early Bajocian to the Late Bajocian and a subsequent warming from the earliest Callovian to the Early/Middle Callovian transition are described using a proxy of sea surface temperatures. About 560 western Greek amphorae (6th–5th centuries BCE) re-used in enchytrismos burials were unearthed in the necropolis of the Dorian-Chalcidian colony of Himera in northwestern Sicily. Among the most striking issues is the determination of their geographical provenance. For this purpose, ceramic samples chipped from freshly broken surfaces of all the amphorae were first subdivided into macrofabrics by the use of a hand lens.
