The catalytic-thermometric determination of molybdenum in steels based on the hydrogen peroxide-iodide indicator reaction

Abstract The Mo VI -catalysed hydrogen peroxide-iodide reaction has been optimised for thermometry in an HCl medium using the initial slope method. The substitution of sodium perborate by H 2 O 2 and the conversion of the reaction to a process showing a Landolt effect are considered and discussed. The linear range extended from 0.2 μg Mo VI ml −1 to 1.2 μg Mo VI ml −1 with a detection limit of 0.06 μg Mo VI ml −1 . Interferences were also studied. The optimised procedure was applied to the evaluation of molybdenum in steels after extraction with α-benzoinoxime in chloroform.

Organic chlorine compounds in lake sediments. II Organically bound chlorine

Abstract Organically bound chlorine together with inorganic chloride was measured from dated bottom sediment layers of 18 lakes in Central Finland and compared to organic matter contents. Pulp mills were found to be the source of significant increase of the accumulation of all of these materials in the 20th century.

Structural studies of adsorbed protein (betalactoglobulin) on natural clay (montmorillonite)

International audience; In this work, the adsorption of a small globular protein (betalactoglobulin, BLG), on a natural montmorillonite clay (Mt) was investigated in acidic buffer (pH = 3). The combination of different characterization techniques such as zetametry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electronic microscopy, fluorescence and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies shed light on the interaction mechanism between the clay mineral and the proteins. For low BLG concentration, a slight increase of the interlayer spacing of the clay mineral was noticed as well as structural changes of the protein. Molecular and isotopic composition of free hydrocarbon gases from Sicily, Italy

[1] Chemical and isotopic data have been used as geochemical tracers for a genetic characterization of hydrocarbon gases from a total of eleven manifestations located in Eastern and Central-Southern Sicily (Italy). The molecular analysis shows that almost all the samples are enriched in methane (up to 93.2% Vol.), with the exception of four gas samples collected around Mt. Etna showing high mantle-derived CO2 content. Methane isotope signatures suggest that these are thermogenic gases or a mixture between thermogenic gases and microbial gases. Chemical modification of Topaz surfaces

In chemisorption, one is typically faced with the problem that the two-dimensional structure of the organic layer does not match the structure of the inorganic substrate. This work describes the first steps toward an induced epitaxial correlation of organic compounds on an inorganic surface. The idea of this work was to use a single crystal with a two-dimensional surface structure, Topaz (001), that matches an alkyl chain lattice better than existing substrates. X-ray reflectivity and FTIR experiments prove the surface modification of the Topaz, which is probably an etherification of the reactive OH-groups on the Topaz (001) surface.

Films for greenhouses are an attractive source of post-consumer plastic materials because they are mainly made of polyethylene and can be easily collected in large amounts in small zones. Effect of irradiation temperature and dose rate on the mechanical tensile behaviour of low density polyethylene

Abstract The effect of ageing due to gamma radiation, at various dose rates and temperatures, on the mechanical tensile behaviour of low density polyethylene is studied. In order to detect synergistic effects, tensile tests on samples subjected to thermal treatment corresponding to the same temperature for the same time as for the irradiation tests have also been performed. The results indicate a generalized decrease of the elongation at break, with brittleness of the material for the most severe ageing treatments. An Appraisal by M.I.P of the Changes Induced in the Microstructure of Complex Sulfide Ores by Reactive Thermal Treatments in H2 and N2

Summary Changes in the microstructure of complex sulfide ores resulting from reactive thermal treatments in either H2 or N2 were investigated qualitatively by combined scanning electron microscopy and X ray microanalysis, and quantitatively by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and mercury pycnometry. With increasing treatment temperature, we successively observed: 1) the development of fractures, preferentially at interfaces between the various mineral components, 2) the development of meso and macropores and the simultaneous swelling of the solids and 3) the crystallization or recrystallization of the metal or sufide phase products. Thallium geochemistry in the metamorphic Lengenbach sulfide deposit, Switzerland: Thallium-isotope fractionation in a sulfide melt

The Lengenbach (Switzerland) Pb-As-Tl-Zn deposit was formed from a sulfide melt at about 500 °C during Alpine metamorphism, but details on its formation and especially the source of the metals are still under debate.
