Five acetate-diphenoxo triply-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(I) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) of formula [Co(mu-L)(mu-Ac)Ln(NO3)(2)] and two diphenoxo doubly-bridged Co-II-Ln(III) complexes (Ln(III) = Gd, Tb) of formula [Co(H2O)(mu-L)Ln(NO3)(3)]center dot S (S = H2O or MeOH), were prepared in one pot reaction from the compartmental ligand N,N',N ''-trimethyl-N,N ''-bis(2-hydroxy3-methoxy-5-methylbenzyl)diethylene triamine (H2L). Water vapour adsorption onto Ca2+ Camp–Berteau montmorillonite and comparison with properties of Na+ sample

Abstract In this paper, we present an analysis of the adsorbed amounts and adsorption heats of water vapour of Ca2+ Camp–Berteau montmorillonite. Measurements were obtained at 298 K using thermogravimetry and calorimetry as a function of relative pressure and the study was completed by the adsorption of nitrogen at 77 K. Experimental data were analysed with BET and t-method theories and compared with those of the Na+ sample. A correlation was shown between models and two domains observed on the calorimetric curves. Capillary hysteresis in cylindrical nanopores has been studied using MCM-41 as the prime example of a mesoporous material. These materials, due to their regular pore structure, can be considered to be candidates for reference adsorbents for standardizing adsorption measurements and methods for characterization of porous solids. Dating archeological lead artifacts from measurement of the corrosion content using the voltammetry of microparticles.

A methodology for dating archeological lead artifacts based on the voltammetry of microparticles is described. This methodology is based on the comparison of the height of speci¿c voltammetric features from PbO2 and PbO corrosion products formed under long-term alteration conditions. Calibration of the method was performed with the help of a series of well-documented lead pieces from the funds of di¿erent museums of the Comunitat Valenciana (Spain) covering from the ¿fth century B.C. to present day. EDXRF and TXRF analysis of elemental size distributions and environmental mobility of airborne particles in the city of Riga, Latvia

Airborne particles were investigated in the central part of Riga during October 2000. Mass, black carbon and elemental concentrations of airborne particles were measured on Teflon filters from a dichotomous impactor, which samples fine (<2.5 µm) and coarse (2.5‐10 µm) fractions of particles. The dynamics of the stable fractions of soil organic matter (SOM), the humic substances, has been rarely studied in tropical soils. We evaluated extraction yields, elemental composition, isotopic d 13 C abundance and solid-state 13 C NMR spectra of humic fractions isolated from five forested and cultivated soils in Ethiopia in order to assess the influence of deforestation and subsequent cultivation on the composition of humic fractions. Determination of Platinum-Group Elements (PGE) from catalytic converters in soil by means of docimasy and INAA.

The nickelsulfide fire assay (docimasy) for the enrichment of platinum-group elements (PGEs) has been modified for the use with small samples and combined with instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA). This procedure has been applied to the determination of PGEs exhausted from catalytic converters and deposited in soil near the Wiesbadener Kreuz (highway A3, Frankfurt-Koln). Our results show a considerable enhancement of the Pt (up to 330 ng/g), Pd (6.6 ng/g) and Rh (7.5 ng/g) contents close to the highway.

A review of non-chromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

This manuscript overviews relevant scientific literature concerning speciation of trace elements by using non-chromatographic methods. The main principles of the different strategies proposed in the published works and their advantages and drawbacks are discussed in order to provide to the readers an appropriate picture of the state-of the-art of fast and cheap methodologies available to obtain information about the presence of different chemical forms of trace elements in environmental, clinical and food samples. A selection of the methods proposed for the speciation of the different elements studied was also provided together with their main features.

Sol–Gel Synthesis of Tunable Cerium Titanate Materials

Cerium titanate structures present a high technological interest because of their optical and catalytic properties. This work reports the synthesis of these materials by a sol–gel methodology that allows mixed oxides with TiIV/CeIII, TiIV/CeIV or TiIV/CeIII–CeIV species to be obtained. Crystallization of CeO2–TiO2 mixed oxides and Ce2Ti2O7 pyrochlore phase was corroborated by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Magnetic and EPR measurements were performed in order to clarify the oxidation state of the cerium ions in the system as a result of the easy oxidation of CeIII. Mn3+ in garnets III. Absence of Jahn-Teller distorition in synthetic Mn3+-bearing garnet

The crystal structure of a ternary Mn3+-bearing garnet, close to the composition Gross34 Spess26 CaMnGt40 has been refined to a weighted R-value of 0.051 for 440 unique reflections. The lattice constant is 11.867(1) A, fractional atomic parameters for oxygen are x=0.0374 (2), y=0.0470 (2), and z=0.6532 (2). Refinement of site occupancies gave 0.81 (3) Ca+0.19 (3) Mn2+ in the eight coordinated site 24c and 0.64 (2) Al+0.36 (2) Mn3+ in the octahedral site 16a. No deviation from the cubic space group Ia3d has been observed, the Mn3+-bearing YO6 octahedron is nearly regular. Thus, the presence of the 3d 4-configurated ion Mn3+ does not cause Jahn-Teller distortion in this garnet structure.
