Quantification of low levels of amorphous content in sucrose by hyperDSC.

A method was developed for the quantification of low levels of amorphous content in sucrose with hyperDSC. The method was based on the fact that the change of specific heat at the glass transition is linearly proportional to the amorphous content. It was found out that as annealing time increased, the glass transition temperature moved to a higher temperature and the change of specific heat increased. DeltaC(p) for annealed totally amorphous sucrose was 0.761+/-0.012 Jg(-1) degrees C(-1). Synthetic mixtures with various proportions of crystalline and amorphous sucrose were prepared. In situ measurements have been the basis for monitoring volcanic gas emissions for many years and—being complemented by remote sensing techniques—still play an important role to date. Con- cerning in situ techniques for sampling a dilute plume, an increase in accuracy and a reduction of detection limits are still necessary for most gases (e.g., CO2, SO2, HCl, HF, HBr, HI). Volatile dilution during magma injections and implications for volcano explosivity

Magma reservoirs underneath volcanoes grow through episodic emplacement of magma batches. These pulsed magma injections can substantially alter the physical state of the resident magma by changing its temperature, pressure, composition, and volatile content. Here we examine plagioclase phenocrysts in pumice from the 2014 Plinian eruption of Kelud (Indonesia) that record the progressive capture of small melt inclusions within concentric growth zones during crystallization inside a magma reservoir. Thermal expansion of LiZr2(PO4)3: Water inclusion influence

Abstract Lattice thermal expansion has been measured on three samples of composition LiZr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , prepared by (i) a ceramic method, (ii) a gel-route and (iii) a nonstoichiometric ceramic. The first sample is monoclinic (?), with a transition at 50°C to rhombohedral. The second is clearly monoclinic with lattice parameters depending on the calcination temperature (700 to 1200°C. The Poisson Ratio in CoFe2O4Spinel Thin Films

The response of epitaxial CoFe2O4 thin films to biaxial compressive stress imposed by MgAl2O4 and SrTiO3 single crystalline substrates is studied using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that the Poisson ratio ν signals a non-auxetic behavior and depends on the substrate used. The Raman modes show an increase in frequency when increasing compressive strain by reducing film thickness; this is due to the shrinking of the unit cell volume. Such behavior is in qualitative agreement with recent ab initio calculations, although the measured values are significantly smaller than predictions. Fine grain barium titanate: ferroelectric domains and X-ray diffraction diagram

Through three different studies using various kinds of BaTiO/sub 3/ samples: as a powder while heating over the Curie temperature; as a green ceramic as a function of the forming pressure; as a ceramic while applying a D.C. field. It is shown how X-ray diffraction is able to give information about the evolution of the 90/spl deg/ ferroelectric domain microstructure.

Ferroelectric Domain Walls in BaTiO3: Fingerprints in XRPD Diagrams and Quantitative HRTEM Image Analysis

The structure of ferroelectric domain walls in BaTiO3 has been investigated through two complementary approaches, a global one by the fine analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns, the other essentially local via a quantitative image analysis method developed and applied to High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy images. These two original approaches converge towards a clear description of 90○ walls which are shown to be a 4–6 nm wide region where the crystallographic discontinuity is accommodated by irregular atomic displacements. X-ray diffraction microstructure analysis of mullite, quartz and corundum in porcelain insulators

Abstract The X-ray diffraction microstructure analysis has been performed on commercial samples of the silica and alumina porcelain insulators obtained at 1300 °C, with the same time of firing. The study was carried out on mullite, corundum and quartz by applying several integral breadth methods (i.e. the Williamson–Hall analysis, the Langford method and the Halder–Wagner approximation) and the Fourier analysis (Warren–Averbach method). Due to the great technological importance of the microstructure of kaolinite, characterizing its evolution during dry milling of kaolin and analyzing the microstructural information obtained from different methods were the main aims of this work.
