Pore fabric geometry inferred from magnetic and acoustic anisotropies in rocks with various mineralogy, permeability and porosity.

14 pages; International audience; he ferrofluid impregnation technique combined with anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements (AMSff) is one of the ways to analyze the 3-D geometry of the pore space in a rock and indirectly to infer the anisotropy of permeability. We applied this method on different types of rocks (sandstones and carbonates) with a range of different porosity values (10-30%) and permeability (1 mD to 1 D). To get additional information on both the pore aspect ratio and the directional anisotropy we used another technique, measuring the anisotropy of P-waves velocity (APV) in dry and water saturated conditions. Abstract The regeneration stage using intermittent thermodynamical cycles based on zeolite adsorption (zeolite 13X-H2O) has been studied. This point is of particular interest for understanding of systems of energy storage and cooling. This paper examines the use of microwave energy sources for analysing the regeneration problem. The method proposed allows a considerable decrease in the regeneration time without an increase of the temperature of the material. The energy yields are high and the adsorption-desorption time cycles are short if the microwave field is well tuned. This last is a function of time and of the filling coefficient. On the origin of ‘arrested’ charnockitization in the Chilka Lake area, Eastern Ghats Belt, India: a reappraisal

Arrested-type charnockite formation occurs in an assemblage of high-grade gneisses at several localities of the Chilka Lake area that belongs to the Proterozoic Eastern Ghats Belt of India. The isolated ellipsoidal domains are found exclusively in leucogranite (leptynite) bands that intruded lit-par- lit interbanded granulite-grade supracrustal and intermediate igneous rocks (khondalite–enderbite). Macrostructures and microfabrics document a multiple deformation of the rock assemblage under high-grade conditions. Short and Medium Range Order in Se1-xTexGlasses

Complementary XAFS measurements (LURE and NSLS) of Se 1 - x Te x glasses have been carried out on both the Se and Te K-edges at low and room temperatures. Using a multi-shell best fit analysis procedure, we have reconstructed the Se and Te local environment: (i) first shell intrachain nearest neighbors (Se-Se 1 , Se-Te 1 , Te-Se 1 ,and Te-Te 1 ); (ii) second shell intrachain (Se-Se 2 and Se-Te 2 ) and interchain next nearest neighbors (Se⇔Se 3 single scattering in the chains Se-Se 1 -Se 3 and Se-Te 1 -Se 3 ). A wind tunnel study on the drop-to-particle conversion

Abstract An experimental study was carried out to investigate the processes which occur during drop-to-particle conversion in atmospheric clouds whose drops are evaporating. The experiment was carried out in the Mainz vertical wind tunnel and in a 4-m high fall shaft. Drops consisting of aqueous solutions of NaCl, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , and salts of artificial and natural ocean water, containing various kinds of solid, water-insoluble particles such as clays, were studied. The aerosol particles produced by the evaporation of drops had diameters in the range 0.1–1 μm, 5–20 μm, 40–80 μm and 100–300 μm. The shape and fall mode of these particles are discussed. Abstract In the atmosphere, cloud and fog droplets usually contain insoluble material. The role of these insoluble particles is still unknown today, and is of interest to study. To determine the size distribution and number concentration of these particles in water, different techniques are available. Testing a portable laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy system on geological samples.

9 pages; International audience; This paper illustrates the potentialities of a home-made portable LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) instrument in Earth sciences, more particularly in geochemically recognizing (i) tephra layers in lacustrine sediments and (ii) fossilization processes in ammonites. Abundances for selected lines of Al, Ca, Fe, Ti, Ba and Na were determined in lacustrine chalk sediments of the Jura, where the Laacher See Tephra (LST) layer is recorded. Microstructure of Ag2BI4(B = Ag, Cd) superionics studied by SEM, impedance spectroscopy and fractal dimension analysis

Two silver ion conducting solid electrolytes, Ag2HgI4 and Ag2CdI4, representing a wide class of AgI-based halogenide superionics have been the subjects of study by means of electrical impedance spectroscopy, SEM, porosity measurements and fractal dimension analysis. Even though both materials have been obtained by the same method under strictly identical conditions they were found to exhibit certain differences at the microstructural level. Thus, by the direct measurements of porosity and density it was found that the grain boundaries are better developed in silver mercuric iodide.
