Samples of micaschists, gneisses, and migmatites from a sequence of metamorphic subfacies of the Gevennes Medianes (Dep. Ardeche, France) are characterized chemically by a) a high and only slightly varying Al2O3 content (m.v.=17.57 wt.-%, stand, dev.=1.804, var. coeff.=0.103). b) a negligible variation of the molar MgO/MgO+FeO ratio (m.v.=0.504, stand. dev.= 0.066, var. coeff.=0.130), and c) an insignificant variation of the molar CaO/CaO + Na2O ratio (m.v.=0.360, stand. dev.=0.014, var. coeff.=0.039).

The formation of large quartz veins by rapid ascent of fluids in mobile hydrofractures

Abstract This paper aims to resolve two main problems related to the formation of quartz veins: (1) the predominance of quartz veins at shallow crustal levels and not deeper in the crust, close to the source of metamorphic fluids where the temperature sensitivity of quartz solubility is much higher than at lower, upper-crustal temperatures and (2) the formation of very large 100–1000 m scale quartz veins that would require huge amounts of fluid flow in current models of vein formation. Ni-containing spinel aluminates glass-ceramic materials obtained from cordieritic bulk glasses

Monolithic glasses with compositions 2MO � 2Al2O3 � 5SiO2, being M ¼ Ni and equimolar mixtures of Ni and Mg, were prepared at 1650 C by melting mixtures of raw materials. The crystallization of monoliths was produced by heattreatment at several temperatures up to 1200 C. The crystallization sequence was followed by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. Effect of some additives on the development of spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes for floor-tiles

Abstract The feasibility of developing spinel-based glass-ceramic glazes from a glass with composition in the system ZnO–MgO–B 2 O 3 –Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 was examined. To do it additional fluxes and/or nucleants were added to a parent glass before melting. Pressed pellets of powdered glasses were submitted to standard thermal treatments up to 1200 °C. The crystallization path and the microstructural development at several temperatures were followed by several experimental techniques. The results showed that additions of TiO 2 as nucleant or additional B 2 O 3 as flux to the chosen glass favored the crystallization of cordierite or mullite as main crystalline phase. Carbon dioxide degassing from Tuscany and Northern Latium (Italy)

Abstract The CO 2 degassing process from a large area on the Tyrrhenian side of central Italy, probably related to the input into the upper crust of mantle fluids, was investigated in detail through the geochemical study of gas emissions and groundwater. Mass-balance calculations and carbon isotopes show that over 50% of the inorganic carbon in regional groundwater is derived from a deep source highlighting gas−liquid separation processes at depth. Arsenite adsorption on goethite at elevated temperatures

Abstract Experimental closed-system ΔT acid–base titrations between 10 °C and 75 °C were used to constrain a temperature-dependent 1-pK basic Stern model of the goethite surface complexation reactions. Experimental data for the temperature dependence of pHPZC determined by the one-term Van’t Hoff extrapolation yield a value for goethite surface protonation enthalpy of −49.6 kJ mol−1 in good agreement with literature data. Batch titration data between 10 °C and 75 °C with arsenite concentrations between 10 μM and 100 μM yield adsorption curves, which increases with pH, peak at a pH of 9, and decrease at higher pH values. Voltammetric analysis of iron oxide pigments

Eighteen earthy and four pure synthetic pigments containing alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite), alpha-FeOOH (goethite) and poorly crystalline Fe and Mn oxide species were analyzed by voltammetry of microparticles. Three natural samples were subjected to an interlaboratory test to evaluate the reproducibility of the voltammetric peak potentials and peak shapes. The results confirmed that linear-sweep voltammetry is able to distinguish between poorly crystalline, ferrihydrite-like oxides and well-crystalline hematite and goethite and to detect XRD-amorphous Mn(III,IV) oxides via the peak occurrence. Identification of Earth Pigments by Applying Hierarchical Cluster Analysis to Solid State Voltammetry. Application to Severely Damaged Frescoes

Multivariate chemometric methods are applied for identifying earth pigments from square-wave voltammetric measurements performed at pigment-modified paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes allowing for a separation between hematite-based earths, French ochres, Spanish ochres, siennas, umbers and green earths. This methodology is applied to the identification of the pigments in samples from the ceiling frescoes of Antonio Palomino (dated 1707) in the vaulted nave of the Sant Joan del Mercat church in Valencia (Spain). Abstract Searching for biomarkers or signatures of microbial transformations of minerals is a critical aspect for determining how life evolved on Earth, and whether or not life may have existed in other planets, including Mars. In order to solve such questions, several missions to Mars have sought to determine the geochemistry and mineralogy on the Martian surface.
