Phosphogenesis in the Bonarelli Level from northwestern Sicily, Italy: petrographic evidence of microbial mediation and related REE behaviour

Phosphogenesis at the base of the Bonarelli Level from the Calabianca stratigraphic section (northwestern Sicily) was investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and stable-isotope mass spectrometry. The anoxic event onset is marked by high P(2)O(5tot) concentrations related to the presence of authigenic carbonate-fluorapatite. This mineral is poorly crystallized and occurs in three different forms: (i) fish debris locally showing evidence of re-crystallization, (ii) phosphatically cemented layers, and (iii) dense aggregates of microcrystals. Multi-chronometric ages and origin of Archaean tonalitic gneisses in Finnish Lapland: A case for long crustal residence time

The Tojottamanselka gneisses of the Koitelainen region, northern Finland, have been dated by the Sm-Nd and the common Pb methods. The Sm-Nd data of seven samples from a small area (100 m × 100 m) define an isochron ofT=3.06±0.12 (2σ) Ga, with correspondingINd=0.50848±9 (2σ), oreNd(T)=−3.7±1.8. This age is in good agreement with the zircon U-Pb discordia age (3.1 Ga) reported by Kroner et al. (1981) and is interpreted as the time of magmatic emplacement. 230Th/U-dating of carbonate deposits from ancient aqueducts

Abstract Carbonate deposits in aqueducts, known as calcareous sinter, can reach a considerable thickness and are commonly annually laminated. Environmental and palaeoclimate proxies measured in calcareous sinter samples, such as stable oxygen and carbon isotopes and trace elements, can provide important high-resolution information on hydrological conditions, temperature, and local precipitation in the catchment area of an aqueduct. In order to utilize the proxy data for palaeoclimate reconstruction, the sinter deposits must be dated by annual laminae counting and more precisely by 230 Th/U-dating. International audience; To understand the mechanisms and the parameters controlling the reactivity of tricalcium aluminate in the presence of gypsum at an early age, a study of the hydration of the “C3A–sulphate” system by isothermal microcalorimetry, conductimetry and a monitoring of the ionic concentrations of diluted system suspensions have been carried out with various gypsum quantities. CO2 degassing at La Solfatara volcano (Phlegrean Fields): Processes affecting and of soil CO2

Abstract The soil CO2 degassing is affected by processes of isotope exchange and fractionation during transport across the soil, which can deeply modify the pristine isotope composition. This has been observed in the Solfatara volcano, upon a field survey of 110 points, where the CO2 flux was measured, together with temperature, CO2 concentration and oxygen and carbon isotopes within the soil. Empirical calibration of the clumped isotope paleothermometer using calcites of various origins

We present the first universal calibration of the clumped isotope thermometer for calcites of various mineralizing types. These are an eggshell of an ostrich, a tropical bivalve, a brachiopod shell, cold seep carbonate, and three foraminifera samples that grew between 9 and 38 C. CaCO3 was digested at 90 C using a common acid bath. Considering a difference in phosphoric acid fractionation factors between reaction at 25 and 90 C of 0.069& (Guo et al., 2009), the function between growth temperature T and the excess of 13 C– 18 O bonds in the evolved CO2 is expressed by a linear regression between 1/T 2 and absolute D47 (R 2 = 0.9915):

The formation was deposited along a proximal-distal gradient on this ramp affected by synsedimentary fault movements. A sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical study was conducted to decipher the distribution patterns of sedimentary parameters along such a depth increase over the ramp. A novel procedure, based on the application of the kinetics simulator Gepasi, has been successfully applied for modeling the cation ordering process in two synthetic Mg(Al2-yFe3+y)O4 spinels (y~ 0.39 and 0.54, samples F39 and F54, respectively). The kinetic profiles suggested a two-stage mechanism, with rapid inter-site exchange of Fe3+ with Mg followed by slow exchange of Al with Mg. Oxidation of niobium sheets at high temperature

Abstract This work shows the role of oxygen pressure on growth kinetics, morphology, phase composition and texture of oxide scale in the oxidation of niobium sheets at 900 °C. The particular morphology observed at low pressure shows the existence of competition between edge and surface growth mechanisms. Pressure and conversion rate influence the nature of preferential orientations of the Nb2O5 oxide layer: a [110] fibre axis is stabilized at high pressure but, at low pressure, the higher is the conversion rate, the more evident is this fibre axis.
