Luminescence of rutile structured crystalline silicon dioxide (stishovite)

Abstract Luminescence spectrum of synthetic mono-crystalline stishovite comprises a slow blue band at ~400 nm (~3.1 eV) and a fast UV band at ~260 nm (~4.7 eV), as well as some bands in near-infrared range of spectra. The NIR luminescence of stishovite crystal, excited with lasers 532 nm, 248 nm and 193 nm as well as x-ray, possesses several sharp lines. A zero phonon line is situated at 787 nm (1.57 eV) and grows with cooling. An anti-Stokes line is located at 771 nm (1.68 eV). This line disappears with cooling. In a powder sample of stishovite created by shock waves generated by the impact of a 50-m-diameter meteorite in Arizona 50,000 years ago, the PL broad blue band is situated at 425 …

International audience; Y2O3:Er3+, Yb3+ nanocrystals have been obtained by ball milling and using a combustion synthesis procedure. In both cases the nanocrystals have been successfully coated with SiO2 following the Stöber method. The average size of the as-synthesized nanoparticles has been estimated from X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images. The dependence of the optical properties of these samples on synthesis procedure or dopant concentration has been investigated. Emission, excitation and lifetime measurements have been carried out. Luminescence of Ce‐doped borate‐oxyfluoride glass ceramics

In the present work we studied the possibility to obtain oxyfluoride glass ceramics based on a lithium and potassium borate glasses with addition of fluorides. Lithium-borate glasses without lanthanum fluoride are transparent up to 275 nm. In samples with LaF3 doped with Ce-activator, an additional absorption at about 300 nm and intense photoluminescence could be observed. Ce-doped potassium-borate glass with addition of fluorides LaF3, LiF and GdF3 was milky and not transparent, an intense photoluminescence has been observed, X-ray diffraction measurements showed a presence of well-pronounced crystalline phases of LiF as well as of GdBO3. Luminescence and energy transfer in Dy3+/Eu3+ co-doped aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses and glass-ceramics

Abstract A series of oxyfluoride glasses with the composition SiO2–CaF2–Al2O3–CaO, doped with Dy2O3 (0.5–1 mol%) and Eu2O3 (0–4 mol%), have been prepared using the melt quenching method. The glass-ceramics have been obtained by heating the as-made glasses at 680 °C and 750 °C for 1 h. The glasses and the glass-ceramics were investigated using photoluminescence techniques in the near-UV and visible ranges, and differential thermal analysis (DTA) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed. Differentiation of natural and synthetic gem-quality diamonds by luminescence properties

Abstract Laser-excited time-resolved and UV-excited static photoluminescence (PL) as well as cathodoluminescence (CL) techniques were applied to identify the origin of diamonds. Samples represented natural faced and rough diamonds from diamond market and different kimberlites as well as the most common high pressure–high temperature (HPHT) and as-grown synthetic diamonds. The time-resolved PL spectra of natural and synthetic diamonds display clear mutual differences. The static PL and CL spectra of natural diamonds revealed emission bands caused by complex nitrogen–vacancy (N–V)-aggregates whereas the bands of synthetic diamonds reflect simple N–V-aggregates and nickel-containing defects. The nanostructured oxide materials such as ZnO, ZrO2, and Y3Al5O12 (YAG) are perspective materials for transparent scintillating and/or laser ceramics. The luminescence properties of single crystals, nanopowders and ceramic were compared. Nominally pure and rare-earth doped nanopowders and ceramics have been studied by means of time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. The fast blue luminescence band was studied in ZnO ceramics sintering from different raw materials. The luminescence centres of ZrO2:Y were compared in a single crystal, ceramic and nanopowder. Rheological Response of Polyethylene/Clay Nanocomposites to Annealing Treatment

The rheological response of a polyethylene/clay nanocomposite to annealing treatment under air and nitrogen atmospheres was studied. The treatment influences the rheology of the nanocomposite significantly. In particular, the viscosity and the non-Newtonian behavior dramatically increase with annealing time, and a liquid-like/solid-like transition is observed. The annealed samples were characterized by ATR-FT-IR spectrometry and it was shown that a silicate-rich layer is formed on the surface of the nanocomposite. The data comprise morphological observations as well as the determination of critical parameters as a function of the blend composition and of the processing conditions.
Slow crack propagation in polyethylene: determination and prediction

Abstract A model is developed connecting the stress intensity factor KI with the propagation rate d h d t of slow cracks. The model is based on the concept of the chain relaxation capability. Experimental KIversus d h d t data are reported for polyethylenes of varying molecular mass M, density ϱ, initial notch length h0 and at different stress levels σ. Predictions of the theory concerning the effect of each of these parameters on crack propagation are confirmed by the experimental results.
