Searching for pulsed emission from XTE J0929-314 at high radio frequencies
2009
The aim of this work is to search for radio signals in the quiescent phase of accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars, in this way giving an ultimate proof of the recycling model, thereby unambiguously establishing that accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars are the progenitors of radio millisecond pulsars. To overcome the possible free-free absorption caused by matter surrounding accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars in their quiescence phase, we performed the observations at high frequencies. Making use of particularly precise orbital and spin parameters obtained from X-ray observations, we carried out a deep search for radio-pulsed emission from the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar XTE J0929-31…
EFFICIENCY OF INTERNAL SHOCKS IN MAGNETIZED RELATIVISTIC JETS
2011
We study the dynamic and radiative efficiency of conversion of kinetic-to-thermal/magnetic energy by internal shocks in relativistic magnetized outflows. A parameter study of a large number of collisions of cylindrical shells is performed. We explore how, while keeping the total flow luminosity constant, the variable fluid magnetization influences the efficiency and find that the interaction of shells in a mildly magnetized jet yields higher dynamic, but lower radiative efficiency than in a non-magnetized flow. A multi-wavelength radiative signature of different shell magnetization is computed assuming that relativistic particles are accelerated at internal shocks.
Interacting dark energy in a closed universe
2020
Recent measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Anisotropies power spectra measured by the Planck satellite show a preference for a closed universe at more than $99 \%$ Confidence Level. Such a scenario is however in disagreement with several low redshift observables, including luminosity distances of Type Ia Supernovae. Here we show that Interacting Dark Energy (IDE) models can ease the discrepancies between Planck and Supernovae Ia data in a closed Universe. Therefore IDE cosmologies remain as very appealing scenarios, as they can provide the solution to a number of observational tensions in different fiducial cosmologies. The results presented here strongly favour broader analyses of cosmolo…
Towards the european strategy for particle physics: The briefing book
2007
This document was prepared as part of the briefing material for the Workshop of the CERN Council Strategy Group, held in DESY Zeuthen from 2nd to 6th May 2006. It gives an overview of the physics issues and of the technological challenges that will shape the future of the field, and incorporates material presented and discussed during the Symposium on the European Strategy for Particle Physics, held in Orsay from 30th January to 2nd February 2006, reflecting the various opinions of the European community as recorded in written submissions to the Strategy Group and in the discussions at the Symposium.
Measurement of CP asymmetry in D 0 → K - K + and D 0 → π - πdecays
2014
Time-integrated $CP$ asymmetries in $D^0$ decays to the final states $K^- K^+$ and $\pi^- \pi^+$ are measured using proton-proton collisions corresponding to $3\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at centre-of-mass energies of $7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$ and $8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$. The $D^0$ mesons are produced in semileptonic $b$-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial flavour of the charm meson. The difference in $CP$ asymmetries between the two final states is measured to be \begin{align} \Delta A_{CP} = A_{CP}(K^-K^+)-A_{CP}(\pi^-\pi^+) = (+0.14 \pm 0.16\mathrm{\,(stat)} \pm 0.08\mathrm{\,(syst)})\% \ . \nonu…
Event reconstruction algorithms for the ATLAS trigger
2007
The ATLAS experiment under construction at CERN is due to begin operation at the end of 2007. The detector will record the results of proton-proton collisions at a centerof- mass energy of 14 TeV. The trigger is a three-tier system designed to identify in real-time potentially interesting events that are then saved for detailed offline analysis. The trigger system will select approximately 200 Hz of potentially interesting events out of the 40 MHz bunch-crossing rate (with 109 interactions per second at the nominal luminosity). Algorithms used in the trigger system to identify different event features of interest will be described, as well as their expected performance in terms of selection…

Vertigo and osteoporosis: The correlation between nutritional intake of Vitamin D and incidence of recurring benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in …
2018
Introduction: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral cause of vertigo. It can be defined as transient vertigo induced by rapid changes in head position associated with a characteristic paroxysmal positional nystagmus. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between the serum calcium and Vitamin D levels in osteoporotic patients affected by recurrent BPPV. Materials and Methods: Calcium and 25-hydroxy-Vitamin D levels were evaluated in peripheral venous serum samples of 40 BPPV patients. Results: The reduction of serum Vitamin D levels is present in 16 of BPPV patients with recurrence. After nutritional intake of Vitamin D there was a decline o…

2022
The brown dwarf population in the Chamaeleon I cloud
2003
We present the results of a multiband survey for brown dwarfs in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on La Silla (Chile). The survey has revealed a substantial population of brown dwarfs in this southern star forming region. Candidates were selected from R, I and H-alpha imaging observations. We also observed in two medium-band filters, M855 and M915, for the purpose of spectral type determination. The former filter covers a wavelength range containing spectral features characteristic of M-dwarfs, while the latter lies in a relatively featureless wavelength region for these late-type objects. A correlation was found between spec…
