A new genus and species of Cylapinae from Namibia (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae)

Abstract A new genus and species, Linnavuorifulvius cheroti gen. et sp. nov., is described on the basis of specimens collected in Namibia. A dorsal habitus picture, pretarsal structure and genitalia illustrations of the new species are presented. The key to Afrotropical genera of the tribe Fulviini is given.

A new species of the Genus Hemiophthalmocoris from the Oriental Region (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae).

Abstract This paper provides the second report of the Cylapinae genus Hemiophthalmocoris Poppius, 1912—H. raunoi sp. nov. outside the Afrotropical Region (Malaysia: Sabah). Scanning electron micrographs of selected structures of Hemiophthalmocoris lugubris Poppius, 1912 are presented. A photograph of the adult of H. raunoi sp. nov. and H. sulawesicus Gorczyca & Cherot, 2002 are given. Illustrations of the male genitalia and dorsal habitus drawing of H. raunoi sp. nov. are provided.

Background: Although native to North America, the invasion of the aphid-like grape phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae across the globe altered the course of grape cultivation. For the past 150 years, viticulture relied on grafting-resistant North American Vitis species as rootstocks, thereby limiting genetic stocks tolerant to other stressors such as pathogens and climate change. Limited understanding of the insect genetics resulted in successive outbreaks across the globe when rootstocks failed. A review on introduced alien insect pests and their associated parasitoids on eucalyptus trees in Sicily

A review is reported in the present paper on invasive alien insects introduced in Sicily on Eucalyptus trees, together with unpublished results from recent surveys. As to the latter ones, observations were conducted especially on Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Carpintero & Dellapé) (Hemiptera, Thaumastocoridae), the most recently introduced species. Overall, eight alien insect pests have been accidentally introduced in the island on Eucalyptus, belonging to the orders Hemiptera (Aphalaridae, 2 spp.; Thaumastocoridae, 1 sp.), Coleoptera (Cerambycidae, 2 spp.; Curculionidae, 1 sp.) and Hymenoptera (Eulophidae, 2 spp.). Aphids are the leading pests in agricultural crops. A large-scale sequencing of 40,904 ESTs from the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum was carried out to define a catalog of 12,082 unique transcripts. A strong AT bias was found, indicating a compositional shift between Drosophila melanogaster and A. pisum. An in silico profiling analysis characterized 135 transcripts specific to pea-aphid tissues (relating to bacteriocytes and parthenogenetic embryos). This project is the first to address the genetics of the Hemiptera and of a hemimetabolous insect.

No exception to the rule: Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum cell wall revisited

International audience; Many insect endosymbionts described so far are gram-negative bacteria. Primary endosymbionts are obligatory bacteria usually harboured by insects inside vacuoles in specialized cells called bacteriocytes. This combination produces a typical three-membrane system with one membrane derived from the insect vacuole and the other two from the bacterial gram-negative cell envelope, composed by the cell wall (the outer membrane plus the periplasmic space) and the plasma membrane (the inner membrane). Genome reduction and potential metabolic complementation of the dual endosymbionts in the whitefly Bemisia tabaci

Background The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is an important agricultural pest with global distribution. This phloem-sap feeder harbors a primary symbiont, “Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum”, which compensates for the deficient nutritional composition of its food sources, and a variety of secondary symbionts. Ammianus pericarti sp. n., the first strictly Palaearctic representative of the genus, is described from Agadir (Morocco) as new to the science. The species is illustrated and compared to all its morphologically similar representatives of the Ammianus junodi group; a key to this species group is also provided. Moreover, A. vanderijsti (Schouteden, 1923) is reported for the first time from the Republic of South Africa.
