Transconductance Converters Based on Current Mirrors Applied to pH Measurement Using ISFET Sensors
2009
New transconductance circuits (V/I converters) are designed based on current mirrors and operational amplifiers. Their input/output characteristics and the influence of DC parameters are obtained. Experimental results were performed, comparing them with the simulated results. An electronic instrumentation circuit is designed based on one of the transconductance converters analyzed. The purpose of this circuit was to condition the response of an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) to measure pH. In the proposed application, the V/I converter presented provides the stability and accuracy of the ISFET operating point, making an easy characterization procedure and the design of multic…
Electrical connections and driving electronics for piezo-actuated x-ray thin glass optics
2016
Use of thin glass modular optics is a technology currently under study to build light, low cost, large area X-ray telescopes for high energy astrophysics space missions. The angular resolution of such telescopes is limited by local deviations from the ideal shape of the mirrors. One possible strategy to improve it consists in actively correcting the mirror profile by gluing thin ceramic piezo-electric actuators on the back of the glasses. A large number of actuators, however, requires several electrical connections to drive them with the different needed voltages. We have developed a process for depositing conductive paths directly on the back of non-planar thin foil mirrors by means of a p…
Disabilità visiva e neuroni specchio: processi di apprendimento nello sviluppo atipico
2009
Early onset Mirror Syndrome associated with foetal sacrococcigeal teratoma: a rare entity
2013
In the mirror syndrome, maternal symptoms mime foetal and placental oedema. The pathogenesis is unknown. The most common etiologic associations are rhesus isoimmunization, twin-twin transfusion syndrome and viral infections. Few reports are associated to foetal tumors and particularly to sacroccoccigeal teratoma (SCT). Based on several published series, foetal SCT with placentomegaly and hydrops is almost universally fatal; foetal surgery is not typically offered for hydropic foetuses beyond 26 weeks of gestational age. Delivery of the foetus is the choise treatment when mirror syndrome is present with supporting the pregnancy until delivery is necessary for maternal indications or the foet…
Statistical sensitivity of the nEDM apparatus at PSI to n − n′ oscillations
2018
The neutron and its hypothetical mirror counterpart, a sterile state degenerate in mass, could spontaneously mix in a process much faster than the neutron β-decay. Two groups have performed a series of experiments in search of neutron – mirror-neutron (n − n′) oscillations. They reported no evidence, thereby setting stringent limits on the oscillation time τnn′. Later, these data sets have been further analyzed by Berezhiani et al.(2009–2017), and signals, compatible with n − n′ oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic fields, have been reported. The Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Collaboration based at the Paul Scherrer Institute performed a new series of experiments to further test…
Asymptotic normalization coefficients and continuum coupling in mirror nuclei
2012
Background: An asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) characterizes the asymptotic form of a one-nucleon overlap integral required for description of nucleon-removal reactions. Purpose: We investigate the impact of the particle continuum on proton and neutron ANCs for mirror systems from $p$- and $sd$-shell regions. Method: We use the real-energy and complex-energy continuum shell model approaches. Results: We studied the general structure of the single-particle ANCs as a function of the binding energy and orbital angular momentum. We computed ANCs in mirror nuclei for different physical situations, including capture reactions to weakly-bound and unbound states. Conclusions: We demonstr…
Transition probabilities in 31P and 31S : A test for isospin symmetry
2021
International audience; Excited states in the mirror nuclei 31P and 31S were populated in the 1p and 1n exit channels of the reaction 20Ne + 12C, at a beam energy of 33 MeV. The 20Ne beam was delivered for the first time by the Piave-Alpi accelerator of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. Angular correlations of coincident γ-rays and Doppler-shift attenuation lifetime measurements were performed using the multi-detector array GASP in conjunction with the EUCLIDES charged particle detector. In the observed B(E1) strengths, the isoscalar component, amounting to 24% of the isovector one, provides strong evidence for breaking of the isospin symmetry in the A=31 mass region. Self-consistent bey…
Manufacturing an active X-ray mirror prototype in thin glass
2015
Adjustable mirrors equipped with piezo actuators are commonly used at synchrotron and free-electron laser (FEL) beamlines, in order to optimize their focusing properties and sometimes to shape the intensity distribution of the focal spot with the desired profile. Unlike them, X-ray mirrors for astronomy are much thinner in order to enable nesting and reduce the areal mass, and the application of piezo actuators acting normally to the surface appears much more difficult. There remains the possibility to correct the deformations using thin patches that exert a tangential strain on the rear side of the mirror: some research groups are already at work on this approach. The technique reported he…
A search for neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations using the nEDM apparatus at PSI
2021
It has been proposed that there could be a mirror copy of the standard model particles, restoring the parity symmetry in the weak interaction on the global level. Oscillations between a neutral standard model particle, such as the neutron, and its mirror counterpart could potentially answer various standing issues in physics today. Astrophysical studies and terrestrial experiments led by ultracold neutron storage measurements have investigated neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations and imposed constraints on the theoretical parameters. Recently, further analysis of these ultracold neutron storage experiments has yielded statistically significant anomalous signals that may be interpreted as …
Isospin mixing and the continuum coupling in weakly bound nuclei
2009
The isospin breaking effects due to the Coulomb interaction in weakly-bound nuclei are studied using the Gamow Shell Model, a complex-energy configuration interaction approach which simultaneously takes into account many-body correlations between valence nucleons and continuum effects. We investigate the near-threshold behavior of one-nucleon spectroscopic factors and the structure of wave functions along an isomultiplet. Illustrative calculations are carried out for the T=1 isobaric triplet. By using a shell-model Hamiltonian consisting of an isoscalar nuclear interaction and the Coulomb term, we demonstrate that for weakly bound or unbound systems the structure of isobaric analog states v…
