In order to respond to environmental changes appropriately, the human brain must not only be able to detect environmental changes but also to form expectations of forthcoming events. Do categorical representations modulate early automatic visual processing? A visual mismatch-negativity study.

Perceptual categorization is an important cognitive function. In the auditory domain, categorization already occurs within the first 200 ms of information processing, as indexed by the mismatch negativity. Here, we assessed the characteristics of the visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) elicited during the categorization of previously unknown visual stimuli. Non-negative matrix factorization Vs. FastICA on mismatch negativity of children

In this presentation two event-related potentials, mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a, are extracted from EEG by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) simultaneously. Typically MMN recordings show a mixture of MMN, P3a, and responses to repeated standard stimuli. NMF may release the source independence assumption and data length limitations required by Fast independent component analysis (FastICA). Thus, in theory NMF could reach better separation of the responses. In the current experiment MMN was elicited by auditory duration deviations in 102 children. In this paper, we narratively review the relationship of PA with cognition and dementia, first from general perspective and then through genetically informed studies on the topic. Somatosensory change detection in the aging brain

The study examined the brain’s automatic somatosensory change detection mechanism using event-related potentials (ERPs) to tactile electrical pulses to fingers in an oddball paradigm. Also the effects of aging to these ERPs were investigated comparing the data of young adults (N = 20, 22–27 years) with the data of aged participants (N = 12, 67–95 years). Automatic auditory and somatosensory brain responses in relation to cognitive abilities and physical fitness in older adults

AbstractIn normal ageing, structural and functional changes in the brain lead to an altered processing of sensory stimuli and to changes in cognitive functions. The link between changes in sensory processing and cognition is not well understood, but physical fitness is suggested to be beneficial for both. We recorded event-related potentials to somatosensory and auditory stimuli in a passive change detection paradigm from 81 older and 38 young women and investigated their associations with cognitive performance.
