Efficacy, tolerability and influence on "quality of life" of nifedipine GITS versus amlodipine in elderly patients with mild-moderate hypertension.

2001

The main purpose of this study was to compare efficacy, tolerability and influence on quality of life (QOL) of nifedipine gastrointestinal therapeutic system (NI) 30-60 mg once a day vs amlodipine (AM) 5-10 mg once a day in elderly patients with mild-moderate hypertension. This was a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, multicenter study. After a 2-week single-blind placebo run-in, patients were randomized to either NI 30 mg or AM 5 mg. Responders continued on the same dosage for 16 additional weeks, while non-responders were titrated to 60 mg NI or 10 mg AM.Blood pressure was measured by mercury sphygmomanometer and efficacy equivalence of NI and AM tested by covariance analysis. Diast…

Advanced technologies for detecting tremor in Parkinson's disease.

2019

Objective Accurate and reliable detection of tremor onset in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is critical to the success of adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) therapy. Here, we investigated the potential use of feature engineering and machine learning methods for more accurate detection of rest tremor in PD. Methods We analyzed the local field potential (LFP) recordings from the subthalamic nucleus region in 12 patients with PD (16 recordings). To explore the optimal biomarkers and the best performing classifier, the performance of state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) algorithms and various features of the subthalamic LFPs were compared. We further used a Kalman filtering technique in feature…

FOXP2 and language alterations in psychiatric pathology

2019

Background. From the first reports of the linguist Noam Chomsky it has become clear that the development of language has an important genetic component. Several reports in families have shown the relationship between language disorders and genetic polymorphisms. The FOXP2 gene has been a fundamental piece for the understanding of language development. This gene codes for a transcription factor containing a forkhead domain of DNA binding and participates in the regulation of the expression of a large number of genes involved in the embryonic development of fundamental neuronal structures needed for the development of speech and language. Objective. To present an updated view of the relations…

Treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. A literature review

2014

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common chronic disease of the oral cavity, affecting 5-25% of the population. The underlying etiology remains unclear, and no curative treatment is available. The present review examines the existing treatments for RAS with the purpose of answering a number of questions: How should these patients be treated in the dental clinic? What topical drugs are available and when should they be used? What systemic drugs are available and when should they be used? A literature search was made of the PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus databases, limited to articles published between 2008-2012, with scientific levels of evidence 1 and 2 (metaanalyses, systematic …

Natalizumab therapy of multiple sclerosis: recommendations of the Multiple Sclerosis Study Group-Italian Neurological Society

2011

Three years after the introduction of natalizumab (NA) therapy for the second line treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), Italian MS centers critically reviewed the scientific literature and their own clinical experience. Natalizumab was shown to be highly efficacious in the treatment of MS. However, the risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy was confirmed and defined better. This article summarizes the MS-SIN Study Group recommendations on the use of NA in MS, with particular reference to the appropriate selection and monitoring of patients as well as to the management of adverse events.

Effectiveness of amlexanox and adcortyl for the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulcers

2015

Background Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common condition that affects approximately 20% of the general population. The ulcers can interfere with speech and eating and cause significant pain and discomfort. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Amlexanox and Adcortyl in the treatment of aphthous ulcers. Material and Methods In this randomized double blind clinical trial with sequential patient entry, a total of 40 patients who presented with aphthous ulcers were included. Patients were received Amlexanox or Adcortyl four times daily for 7 days. Patients were evaluated for pain, lesion size, and tingling at one day, three days, five days and seven days follow-ups. The treat…

Cerebriform sebaceous nevus: a subtype of organoid nevus due to specific postzygotic FGFR2 mutations.

2021

Background Postzygotic mutations in FGFR2 have been identified in mosaic forms of acne, keratinocytic epidermal nevi, nevoid acanthosis nigricans / rounded and velvety epidermal nevus and in two fetuses with papillomatous pedunculated sebaceous nevus (PPSN). Objectives To determine the clinical and genetic characteristics of children with cerebriform, papillomatous, and pedunculated variants of sebaceous nevi. Methods Infants diagnosed with sebaceous nevi characterized by a cerebriform, papillomatous, and/or pedunculated morphology over a 10-year period (2010 - 2019) at three pediatric dermatology centers in Switzerland and France were included in this case series. Clinical and histological…

An Abstract Generic Framework for Web Site Verification

2008

In this paper, we present an abstract framework for Web site verification which improves the performance of a previous, rewriting-based Web verification methodology. The approximated framework is formalized as a source-to-source transformation which is parametric w.r.t. the chosen abstraction. This transformation significantly reduces the size of the Web documents by dropping or merging contents that do not influence the properties to be checked. This allows us to reuse all verification facilities of the previous system WebVerdi-M to efficiently analyze Web sites. In order to ensure that the verified properties are not affected by the abstraction, we develop a methodology which derives the …
