Tiratricol neutralizes bacterial endotoxins and reduces lipopolysaccharide-induced TNF-alpha production in the cell.

2008

Contains fulltext : 70610.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The screening of a commercially available library of compounds has proved a successful strategy for the identification of a lead compound in a drug discovery programme. Here, we analysed 880 off-patent drugs, which initially comprised the Prestwick Chemical library, as sources of bacterial endotoxin neutralizers. We identified 3,3',5-triiodo-thyroacetic acid (tiratricol) as a non-antibacterial compound that neutralizes the toxic lipopolysaccharide.

Theatrum Mundi and site in four television Shakespeare films

2019

This article explores metatheatricality and site specificity in four Shakespeare television films produced by Illuminations Media: Gregory Doran’s Macbeth (2001), Hamlet (2009) and Julius Caesar (2012), and Rupert Goold’s Macbeth (2010). Drawing on metatheatrical theory applied to the screen and recent criticism on site-specific theatre, I explore the films as self-referential and self-conscious works embedded in environments that oppose the artifice of drama to the ‘reality’ of normative television film. Shakespeare’s aesthetic metaphor, presented in self-contained theatrical worlds, does not depict autonomous fictions but is disrupted by outside ‘reality’.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet in Twentieth-century Spanish Poetry

2015

This article investigates the presence of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the poetic production of a selection of twentieth-century Spanish poets, among them, Miguel de Unamuno, Antonio and Manuel Machado, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Federico Garcia Lorca, Leon Felipe, Vicente Aleixandre, Jose Hierro, Blas de Otero, Juan Eduardo Cirlot, Clara Janes and Maria Victoria Atencia. It will be seen how these different poets appropriate Hamlet in their own manner, focusing on dissimilar episodes, concepts and characters to elaborate on their personal reflections on life and death, love, poetry and human nature. Such varied poetic reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s tragedy illustrate not only the multiple poetic po…

A collaborative virtual reality environment for liver surgery planning

2021

Abstract Surgical planning software is a key component in the treatment of tumor diseases. However, desktop-based systems provide only limited visualization and interaction opportunities. Moreover, collaborative planning among members of a surgical team is only possible to a limited extent. In this work, a collaborative virtual reality (VR) environment to assist liver surgeons in tumor surgery planning is presented. Our aim is to improve virtual resection planning between surgeons in a remote or co-located environment. The system allows surgeons to define and adjust virtual resections on patient-specific organ 3D surfaces and 2D image slices. Changes on both modalities are synchronized, whi…

Modelling a proportion response variable using generalised additive models for location scale and shape

2015

In this paper two alternative approaches are proposed to model a response variable Y measured on the interval from zero to one, including both zero and one. The first proposed model employs a flexible four parameter distribution for 0 < Y < 1, for example a logit skew exponential power distribution, inflated by including point probabilities at 0 and 1. The second proposed model is a generalised Tobit model, obtained from a flexible four parameter distribution on (-infinity;+infinity), for example the skew exponential power distribution, by censoring below 0 and above 1. The proposed models are applied to a real data set and compared with current popular models.

Sociodemographic and behavioural correlates of lifetime number of sexual partners: findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

2018

BackgroundNo current data are available on correlates of lifetime sexual partners at older ages. This study aimed to explore correlates of the lifetime number of sexual partners in a sample of older adults.MethodData were from 3054 men and 3867 women aged ≥50 years participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported their lifetime number of sexual partners and a range of sociodemographic characteristics and health behaviours. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was used to examine correlates of lifetime number of sexual partners, with analyses performed separately for men and women and weighted for non-response.ResultsYounger age, being separated/divor…

An LMI Approach to Exponential Stock Level Estimation for Large-Scale Logistics Networks

2013

This article aims to present a convex optimization approach for exponential stock level estimation problem of large-scale logistics networks. The model under consideration presents the dependency and interconnections between the dynamics of each single location. Using a Lyapunov function, new sufficient conditions for exponential estimation of the networks are driven in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The explicit expression of the observer gain is parameterized based on the solvability conditions. A numerical example is included to illustrate the applicability of the proposed design method.

An Automatic Sleep Scoring Toolbox : Multi-modality of Polysomnography Signals’ Processing

2019

Sleep scoring is a fundamental but time-consuming process in any sleep laboratory. To speed up the process of sleep scoring without compromising accuracy, this paper develops an automatic sleep scoring toolbox with the capability of multi-signal processing. It allows the user to choose signal types and the number of target classes. Then, an automatic process containing signal pre-processing, feature extraction, classifier training (or prediction) and result correction will be performed. Finally, the application interface displays predicted sleep structure, related sleep parameters and the sleep quality index for reference. To improve the identification accuracy of minority stages, a layer-w…
