Regional Model Simulations of the Bodélé Low-Level Jet of Northern Chad during the Bodélé Dust Experiment (BoDEx 2005)
2008
Abstract The low-level jet (LLJ) over the Bodélé depression in northern Chad is a newly identified feature. Strong LLJ events are responsible for the emission of large quantities of mineral dust from the depression, the world’s largest single dust source, and its subsequent transport to West Africa, the tropical Atlantic, and beyond. Accurate simulation of this key dust-generating atmospheric feature is, therefore, an important requirement for dust models. The objectives of the present study are (i) to evaluate the ability of regional climate models (RCMs) and global analyses/reanalyses to represent this feature, and (ii) to determine the driving mechanisms of the LLJ and its strong diurnal…
Multi-model simulations of a convective situation in low-mountain terrain in central Europe
2008
The goal of the present study is to investigate the variability of simulated convective precipitation by three convection-resolving models using different set-ups and initial and boundary conditions. The COSMO, MM5 and WRF models have been used to simulate the atmospheric situation on 12 July 2006, when local convection occurred in central Europe under weak synoptic forcing. The focus of this investigation is on the convective precipitation in the northern Black Forest in South-West Germany. The precipitation fields from the nine model simulations differ considerably. Six simulations capture the convective character of the event. However, they differ considerably in the location and timing …
E-learning in corporate training using interactive courses
2017
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2017 Health, safety, and environment (HSE) is an important term in industrial- and corporate context. A company focusing on their employees sharing the same values and attitudes regarding HSE can experience a working environment where employees feels safe, and perform their work without unnecessary risk-taking. There are often seen examples where HSE training relies on traditional classroom teaching, and keeps the focus on “do’s and “don’ts”, but the key to get employees to share a common goal on HSE, is to provide a deeper meaning for each employee on what this term actually mean. The purpose of this research…

2018
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2018 Games are a popular form of entertainment that can keep individuals motivated and engaged for hours at a time. Our motivations to sink multiple hours into playing games have been studied by researchers, instructional designers, and game designers alike, with the goal of understanding and highlighting the elements that have positive or negative effects on the players. Games have also been recognised as a potential teaching and learning tool due to their capability to integrate content and elements that nurture intrinsic motivation, learner engagement, and facilitate different approaches to learning. Howeve…
The differences between tutor and student perceptions of design elements in online courses
2017
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2017 The purpose of this study is to examine tutor and student perceptions of how design elements are implemented in online courses. The four elements collaboration, motivation, digital tools and course structure are discussed in an attempt to identify how various ways of implementing them can impact learning in an online environment. The study discusses how course tutors justify the use of the various elements, and then discusses students perceptions of how these elements impacted learning. The two online courses used in this research are SV-408 E-teaching 1 and MM-106 Nettkunnskap, which are part of a one ye…
Increasing Motivation and Engagement in Learning Safe Humane Hunting Skills Through VR and Digital Games
2020
Master's thesis in Multimedia and educational technology (MM500) This research discusses to what degree a digital learning game can affect motivation, engagement and participation in learning humane and safe hunting, and how a VR version compares to a screen-based version. Additionally, it discusses whether a digital learning game about humane and safe hunting can make learners more confident when taking the ”Jegerprøve” exam and dealing with real-life hunting situations. A game working on both computers and VR equipment was developed using the human-centred design process. The game went through two iterations, and usability testing was conducted on both of them. The results of the testing …
Investigating a Virtual Reality Solution for Rehabilitation in a Biomechatronics Lab and Home Environment
2020
Master's thesis in Multimedia and educational technology (MM500) Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising technical tool in physical rehabilitation. VR rehabilitation (VRR) programs, like any rehabilitation, attempt to promote neuroplasticity to improve physical rehabilitation. Research indicates that VRR is beneficial; it facilitates task-specific training, multi-sensory feedback, and diversifying rehabilitation tasks, which can motivate patients. This master thesis investigates a VR solution for a biomechatronics lab and a home-based system. This project was partially a collaboration between masterstudents at Mechatronics and Multimedia and Educational Technology. The Mechatronics …
