Reactions to a career-ending sport injury : Pekka Hirvonen, a professional ice hockey player

This chapter presents an end of athletic career case of a professional ice hockey player, Pekka Hirvonen. The chapter presents his case, details of the multi-ligament knee injury he suffered, the role of athletic identity, pre-retirement planning, and coping skills in the process of transitioning out of sport. These factors are then further explained through Taylor and Ogilvie’s (1994) conceptual model of adaptation to career transition. Based on the above, an interprofessonal plan of care was developed, and the case was evaluated from the perspective of those involved: a licenced psychologist, his wife, and coach. Hypothesis: Previous acute knee injury and lower perceived knee function measured by Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) will increase the risk of acute knee injury in youth team-sports athletes. Sports-related pain and injury is directly linked to tissue inflammation, thus involving the autonomic nervous system (ANS). In the present experimental study, we disable the sympathetic part of the ANS by applying a stellate ganglion block (SGB) in an experimental model of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) of the biceps muscle. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisia oppimisstrategioita abiturientit käyttävät, kun he opiskelevat ruotsin kielen kielioppia. Tarkoituksena on myös tarkastella, miten poikien ja tyttöjen strategioiden käyttö eroaa toisistaan. Lisäksi tutkielmassa selvitetään, ovatko abiturientit aikaisemmin kuulleet ja käyttäneet tietoisesti hyödykseen oppimisstrategioita ja olisiko heidän mielestään niistä puhuminen koulussa hyödyllistä. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka yläasteen ruotsin kielen opettajat huomioivat opetuksessaan oppilaat, joilla on lukivaikeuksia. Tutkimuksen avulla selvitettiin myös, minkälaisia keinoja opettajat käyttävät opetuksessaan helpottaakseen näiden oppilaiden kieltenopiskelua. Tarkoituksena on myös ottaa selvää, mikä tuottaa vaikeuksia ruotsin kielen suhteen suomenkielisille oppilaille, joilla on havaittu lukivaikeuksia.
