Truncation, Information, and the Coefficient of Variation

The Fisher information in a random sample from the truncated version of a distribution that belongs to an exponential family is compared with the Fisher information in a random sample from the un- truncated distribution. Conditions under which there is more information in the selection sample are given. Examples involving the normal and gamma distributions with various selection sets, and the zero-truncated binomial, Poisson, and negative binomial distributions are discussed. A property pertaining to the coefficient of variation of certain discrete distributions on the non-negative integers is introduced and shown to be satisfied by all binomial, Poisson, and negative binomial distributions.

In this chapter, we study effects caused by incompletely known data. In practice, the data are never known exactly, therefore the results generated by a mathematical model also have a limited accuracy. Then, the whole subject of error analysis should be treated in a different manner, and accuracy of numerical solutions should be considered within a framework of a more complicated scheme, which includes such notions as maximal and minimal distances to the solution set and its radius.

Dyes of a Shadow Theatre: Investigating Tholu Bommalu Indian Puppets through a Highly Sensitive Multi-Spectroscopic Approach

Tholu Bommalu are typical leather puppets of the traditional Indian shadow theatre. Two of these objects are part of a collection in the International Puppets Museum “Antonio Pasqualino” (Palermo, Sicily, Italy), which can count on one hundred-seventy-three of artifacts. These Indian puppets were investigated to obtain information related to the use of dyes for their manufacturing through a multi-technical approach exploiting the combination of highly sensitive spectroscopic techniques. Tutkimukset osoittavat, että pitkittyneet koulupoissaolot aiheuttavat ongelmia nuorille, vanhemmille, kouluille ja koko yhteiskunnalle. Koulupoissaolotyyppien avulla voidaan tunnistaa nuoresta, huoltajasta ja koulusta johtuva poissaolo. Koulupoissaolojen taustalla voi olla jopa 60 eri syytekijää, joita on tärkeä oppia tunnistamaan. Kolmitasoisen tuen mallia voidaan käyttää apuna koulupoissaoloihin puuttumisessa. Koulupoissaoloihin on tärkeä puuttua varhaisessa vaiheessa niin koulupoissaolojen kuin koulupudokkuuden näkökulmista. peerReviewed
