Measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g1(x) of the deuteron
1993
We report on the first measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g1d of the deuteron in the deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons off polarised deuterons, in the kinematical range 0.006<x<0.6, 1 GeV2<Q2<30 GeV2. The first moment, Γ1d=sh{phonetic}01 g1d dx=0.023±0.020 (stat.) ± 0.015 (syst.), is smaller than the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rules. Using earlier measurements of g1p, we infer the first moment of the spin-dependent neutron structure function g1n. The difference Γ1p-Γ1n=0.20 ±0.05 (stat.) ± 0.04 (syst.) agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule, Γ1p-Γ1n=0.191 ±0.002.
B‐DNA structure and stability: the role of nucleotide composition and order
2022
Abstract We have quantum chemically analyzed the influence of nucleotide composition and sequence (that is, order) on the stability of double‐stranded B‐DNA triplets in aqueous solution. To this end, we have investigated the structure and bonding of all 32 possible DNA duplexes with Watson–Crick base pairing, using dispersion‐corrected DFT at the BLYP‐D3(BJ)/TZ2P level and COSMO for simulating aqueous solvation. We find enhanced stabilities for duplexes possessing a higher GC base pair content. Our activation strain analyses unexpectedly identify the loss of stacking interactions within individual strands as a destabilizing factor in the duplex formation, in addition to the better‐known eff…
Effective charge from lattice QCD
2020
Using lattice configurations for quantum chromodynamics (QCD) generated with three domain-wall fermions at a physical pion mass, we obtain a parameter-free prediction of QCD's renormalisation-group-invariant process-independent effective charge, $\hat\alpha(k^2)$. Owing to the dynamical breaking of scale invariance, evident in the emergence of a gluon mass-scale, this coupling saturates at infrared momenta: $\hat\alpha(0)/\pi=0.97(4)$. Amongst other things: $\hat\alpha(k^2)$ is almost identical to the process-dependent (PD) effective charge defined via the Bjorken sum rule; and also that PD charge which, employed in the one-loop evolution equations, delivers agreement between pion parton di…
Thermodynamics and Biophysics of Biomedical Nanosystems Applications and Practical Considerations
2019
This book highlights the recent advances of thermodynamics and biophysics in drug delivery nanosystems and in biomedical nanodevices. The up-to-date book provides an in-depth knowledge of bio-inspired nanotechnological systems for pharmaceutical applications. Biophysics and thermodynamics, supported by mathematics, are the locomotive by which the drug transportation and the targeting processes will be achieved under the light of the modern pharmacotherapy. They are considered as scientific tools that promote the understanding of physicochemical and thermotropic functionality and behavior of artificial cell membranes and structures like nanoparticulate systems. Therefore, this book focusses …
Conformational equilibrium of chorismate. A QM/MM theoretical study combining statistical simulations and geometry optimisations in gas phase and in …
2003
We report a theoretical study on the conformational equilibrium of chorismate that precedes its rearrangement to prephenate, an important enzyme-catalyzed reaction. In first place we show that the usual classification of chorismate conformers based on the relative position of the hydroxyl and ether bridge, pseudo-diaxial and pseudo-diequatorial, is not the only relevant factor from the point of view of the a posteriori rearrangement. Here we also analyse another complementary geometrical classification based on the interatomic distance between the carbon atoms to be bounded. Using the umbrella sampling approach and this distance as distinguished internal reaction coordinate, the gas phase A…
Fibre break failure processes in unidirectional composites: evaluation of critical damage states
2016
Earlier work which successfully modelled the kinetics of fibre breakage in unidirectional composites under monotonic tensile loading has been extended to quantify the kinetics of fibre failure during both monotonic and sustained tensile loading. In both cases, failure was seen to occur when a critical density of large clusters (more than 16 fibres are broken within the representative volume element) of fibre breaks developed. However, in monotonic loading failure occurred very quickly after the first development of these large clusters, whereas under sustained loading the composite could accommodate greater levels of large clusters because of the lower applied load. This article is part of …
MODY izraisošo mutāciju detektēšana, izmantojot eksomu sekvenēšanu
2015
MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young) ir monogēnā cukura diabēta veids, kam raksturīga autosomāli dominanta pārmantošana un simptomu izpausme pirms 25 gadu vecuma. Mutācija kādā no trim gēniem – HNF1α, HNF4α un GCK, sastāda 70-80% MODY gadījumu, tomēr pastāv vēl vismaz 10 gēni, kuros radušās mutācijas spēj izraisīt MODY simptomus.
Precision measurement of the mass difference between light nuclei and anti-nuclei
2015
The measurement of the mass differences for systems bound by the strong force has reached a very high precision with protons and anti-protons. The extension of such measurement from (anti-)baryons to (anti-)nuclei allows one to probe any difference in the interactions between nucleons and anti-nucleons encoded in the (anti-)nuclei masses. This force is a remnant of the underlying strong interaction among quarks and gluons and can be described by effective theories, but cannot yet be directly derived from quantum chromodynamics. Here we report a measurement of the difference between the ratios of the mass and charge of deuterons and anti-deuterons, and $^{3}{\rm He}$ and $^3\overline{\rm He}…
Electrocatalytic rate constants from DFT simulations and theoretical models: Learning from each other
2022
Electrochemical interfaces present an extraordinarily complex reaction environment and several, often counter-acting, interactions contribute to rate constants of electrocatalytic reactions. We compile a short review on how electrode potential, solvent, electrolyte, and pH effects on electrocatalytic rates can be understood and modelled using computational and theoretical methods. We address the connections between computational models based on DFT and (semi)analytical model Hamiltonians to extract physical or chemical insights, identify some omissions in present DFT simulation approaches and analytic models, and discuss what and how simulations and models could learn from each other. peerR…
Vaporization Characteristics of Ethanol Droplets: Influence of the Environment Humidity
2011
The study of the gasification of a droplet via vaporization, which involves heat, mass and momentum transfer processes in gas and liquid phases, and their coupling at the droplet interface, is necessary for better understanding and modeling of complex spray and mixture formation issues. A detailed description of the vaporization of an isolated droplet has been realized in this experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of the water vapor contained in the surrounding gas on the evaporation of an ethanol droplet. The experimental set-up consists of a heated chamber with a cross quartz fibers configuration as droplet support. An ethanol droplet is located at the intersection of the c…
