2006
Focusing on some passages of life histories collected in Asmara and based on the ‘memory of Italy’, I study the representation of the past in order to reveal the shaping of the subjective experience by the colonial discourse in Eritrea. If the main aim of my essay is the understanding of the play of interactions between individuals and collectivity, one more important element I take into account is ‘memory’ seen as a “social selection of remembering” (Halbwachs). I try to connect the social position and narrative role of single members (of the Eritrean society) to the meaning it takes the ‘going back to the past’ for them as individuals belonging to a group (an Eritrean, a Mestizo, an Itali…
Thermoelectric devices and supercapacitors based on nanostructured semiconducting polymers for energy production and storage
2017
The Past ‘Interpreter’. Historical Stratifications in the Ritual Symbolism of Saint Joseph Festivals and Holy Week in Sicily
2020
OUR MOTHER OF THE WOODS. A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE "MADONNAS OF THE TREES" IN THE EURO-MEDITERRANEAN AREA
2016
Looking at the Madonnas of the trees, we see how an anthropologist disregarding historical depth renounces an integral vision of reality by which it can be measured and interpreted, giving rise «to sometimes narrow, sometimes even grotesque results; with an unexpected resurrection, however, of a banally sociological perspective, in many cases hidden under the false pretences of social anthropology». The effects of such a surrender are particularly evident when we explore the symbolic dimension. In fact, a purely synchronic approach proves to be totally inadequate: «research can be restored its critical depth and substance by paying attention to the processes of construction of meaning and t…
Study of thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamic convection on solute redistribution during laser additive manufacturing
2020
Abstract Melt pools formed in laser additive manufacturing (AM) are subject to large thermal gradients, resulting in the formation of thermoelectric currents due to the Seebeck effect. When in the presence of an external magnetic field, a Lorentz force is formed which drives fluid flow in the melt pool. This Thermoelectric Magnetohydrodynamics (TEMHD) phenomenon, can have a significant impact on the melt pool morphology and can alter the microstructural evolution of the solidification process. By coupling steady-state mesoscopic melt pool calculations to a microscopic solidification model, predictions of the resulting microstructure for multiple deposited layers have been obtained. The resu…
Early Jurassic (Sinemurian) gastropods from the Lusitanian Basin (west of Portugal)
2020
The Sinemurian gastropod specimens herein studied come from two sources: from museum collections and from samplings in field. The study of the Sinemurian gastropod specimens housed in the collections of the Museu Geológico (Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia), Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (University of Lisbon), Museu da Ciência (University of Coimbra) and of the Museu de História Natural e da Ciência (University of Porto), has allowed the systematic and taxonomical update of this material. These specimens come mostly from Sinemurian outcrops in S. Pedro de Moel area and Coimbra region, and were collected by Paul Choffat and collaborators in the geological field w…
